Scraping noise from rear suspension; inner banana arm bushings?
I have an awful scraping sort of sound coming out of the rear suspension that so far has defied detection. The sound is what you might imagine the heat exchangers might sound like if they were somehow scraping on the body while the car was being driven.
I hear the sound at slow speeds in left hand turns, and occasionally when getting in and out of the car and loading the suspension. We have changed a few parts and tested after removing others. For example the car has been driven without sway bars, and the spring plate bushings have been replaced. The shocks are new, the motor mounts seem fine. A current candidate for the noise is the inner banana arms bushings which have been in this 1974 car for forty years. Wonder if anyone who has suffered an unpleasant metal-on-metal scraping sound at the rear of their earlier car has replaced these bushings and found relief? More generally, has anyone suffered such a sound and found the cause?

Max, many thanks. I have checked the dampers at the bottom but not at the top. I'll look. The noise I have sounds like it could be made by the covers hitting something.

Can I ask what part is the shock cover. One of mine is creaking and I can't see what part is rubbing on what. Green Bilsteins.
Thanks, Dave

When you look at the shock you are looking at two tubes, one of which slides inside the other. The bigger one is the cover.

Maybe, or one of the tubes is touching the body somewhere as it moves.
