Distributor Grease?
I'm replacing the distributor cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires in my 1985 911.
Many posts reference Bosch distributor grease, however, it's NLA. Any,suggestions on what I should use instead? Thanks. LS |

What would you grease in an '85 distributor?
Back in ancient times we would grease the cam that actuated the points in our distributors. Some of us old-timers remember points, and carburetors.

...and Dwell meters. We used to get a small blister container of the lube with the points.
Today, your '85 may only need some thin oil under and lightly saturating the felt piece under the rotor.

Bosch distributor grease is probably still available at any VW parts place.
But as they have said. Not much use for it in a Motronic ignition car.

Search for part number 5-700-002-005 .
It is the bosch distributor grease 45 ml tube. 5-700-002-025 is the same product in 225 ml tube. I've found febi-bilstein high temp grease on amazon.... very good product |

I use it on my '70 Beetle when I change out the points, but on your car which has the Motronic system you have no points to worry about. You're probably reading posts by early Porsche owners whose engines require a set of points. The only thing under the distributor cap you need to worry about replacing is the rotor.

As the boys said no grease necessary but you are correct the Bosch is no longer in production. But there is a good substitute for it.At Pelican part Sachs grease. Is the same even better.

I have points in my 1973.5T and when you purchase the points it comes with a small capsule of grease to lube the distributor shaft for fiber block. A tube of Bosch Points Lube (still available) is enough to last decades if not a century!!!!

Under the rotor is a circle of felt that needs to have a few drops of oil, sewing machine, 3 in one, or other low viscosity oil every time you look under the cap. It lubricates the upper bushings in the distributor.

Ivan.......................Zim's Autotechnik sells a small 2 gram pack of Bosch Distributor Grease just for your points for one-dollar. Go to their website, and the SKU is 5700002005 for the product.
Another company, LufteKnic in Richmond, Va who sells Porsche parts sells the grease in huge 225 ML tubes for $24.75. I still have my black and white 45ML tube of Bosch grease that has lasted over 20 years! This should help you out. Bob |

Hi Bob
no on points, but i have been using it on oil return tubes for past 30 years .It is very easy to open them on installation...the Sachs is very close to it but if i can get my hands on Bosch that is the best... Ivan |
