Red face Half shaft questions?

I bought my first P-car not too long ago and am in the process of getting it back on the road (long story so far!)
It's a 72 911T with the 5 speed 915. It's been sitting a few years, and has 82K on the odo.
Anyway, I was under it today replacing the electric fuel pump and noticed that the drivers side half shaft is loose where it attaches to the Tranny!
The gasket is way off center (looks like there are two gaskets in there)
I could turn the allen screws with my fingers.

What should I do next? the wheels/bearings/CVs sound fine if you turn them by hand.

Can you just remove the allen screws and replace the gasket without and further dis-assembly?
My Haines manual is a bit sketchy. The gaskets are reasonable at $1.90 for 4 from Pelican.

Help!!

Do not drive the car until you tighten this CV flange joint and check the other three. If your set-up is original there should be 4 high strength (12.9) 10 mm socket head cap screws and two roll pins ("Spirol" type) securing each CV joint flange to the corresponding flange on the transmission final drive or the wheel hub assembly. There are lower strenghth metric socket head screws available; do not use these, if you replace the screws get 12.9 grade. There should be a single treated cardboard type gasket between each flange set. The screws should be installed with the threads unlubricated and tightened using a torque wrench to 60 ft-lbs. Clean out the female threads as required in the mating flange on the tranmission final drive or the wheel hub assembly. The hex inside the screw head should be 8 mm but some screws came with a 12 point triple-square drive feature in the head which will take a special bit. There should also be a curved, arc shaped washer plate under and spanning between each pair of screws and a "Schnoor" type lock washer under the head of each screw. Schnoor lock washers have a dished shape with serrations on both sides; the concave side of the dish goes towards the washer plate. Schnoor washers should be replaced and not reused. Clean out and inspect the screw heads throughly before attempting to tighten; if the the hex sockets in the heads show signs of rounding replace the screws (Pelican sells them). If the car has been outside in the weather I'd check the inside of the loose flange for dirt and water. If there is only minor dust I'd wipe it and reinstall. If it's wet and dirty I'd clean and repack the CV joint and consider replacing the boot. If the maintenance history of the car is unknown you might consider just replacing all four boots and clean and repack all the CV joints or at least consider doing it in the near future. There are past threads complete with images on how to take apart and reassemble the CV joints and half shafts. Also see the book "101 Projects". I think Pelican sells everything you might need in the way of parts, tools and lubricants. Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim, I'm in the process of replacing my CV boots (on an '88 3.2), and mine did NOT have the 'Schnoor' (or any other type of washers) between the hex head screws and the 'washer plates'. Since she has only 49K on her, I doubt seriously if these have been touched since she left the factory. Are all models supposed to have the 'Schnoor' washers? Thanks to anyone who can verify this...I'm very much 'learning as I go', and want to make sure I do it 'right'!

The G50 style tranny mount is completely different. It attaches to the transaxle with 8 10x50 hex head bolts, pairs go through a backing plate.

Wow!
Great reply Jim, thanks!!!
Of course this generates more questions:

What size socket fits the rear axle nut on a 72 911T? (from my search on "half shaft" I know I'd better get 3/4" drive)

Where O where do you find new "Schnoor" lock washers?

Skip,

Pelican carries the Schnorr washers, or a well-equipped bolt store might have them.

For most of my misc. metric bolts and supplies, I have been dealing with these folks for ... 24 years:

The Schnorr washers are called 'Rib Spring' washers in their catalog ... the free Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view catalog.

Skip, You do not need to take apart the rear wheel hub to do work on the CV joints and half shafts on a '72. The outboard CV joint bolts to a flange just like the inboard side CV joint hence you don't need to deal with a rear wheel hub nut. Jim

KC911, '84 and later did not come with the Schnoor lock washers on the CV joint screws. The '84 and later CV joint screws had a different part number so perhaps these screws have an inherent locking feature (speculation on my part about the inherent locking feature). Jim
