if not a SC then what, and why
with all the recent smack flying around regarding the merrits of the best 911 ever i got to thinking, now i know some of you may find that hard to believe but i have been. my thought was to pose this question, instead on selling whats bad about another model, like the semi carrera, or when to shift light comes on i HAVE to shift, tell us what makes your model the finest 911. we have heard about another 1/10 or 2/10 or even 6/10 liter, or head studs, weight, or what have you. lets this time try to be positive and note what makes the car we drive the best.
i will start, when i 1st began to get seriuos about the purchase of a 911 i had a budget that i was going to have to stick to. in my research i found alot of the pitfalls of each model and its merits and based my choice on those factors and available funds. i figured that i could get a carrera with 100K+ for my $15 to $20K in not to good of shape, or i could look for an older car with less miles or confirmed rebuild work. when my work had been done i figured an SC was for me. this was before i even aware of the domination plot that im currently involved in, but thats a story for another time. i looked for 6 months, and low and behold the economy took a dump and the DOT.COM collapse worked to my benefit, a guy lost his job, and his 78 SC with 64K original miles was mine for 15.5K. so my choice was influenced by factors none other that to get the best bang for my buck and an SC was it, the world domination was just icing on the cake. toby |

I've had both the SC and the Carrera and I think that for one looking for a car from '78 to '89, Bruce Anderson's standard advice is applicable: Buy the best example you can afford.
If one has a budget of $15K or less, I think that most likely means get an SC. I'd rather have a really nice $15K SC than a ratty or not so nice $15K Carrera any day. And, having been involved in the search and purchase of more than a few SCs and Carreras over the past 5 years (mostly helping friends), I can safely say that there are plenty of ratty examples of SCs and Carreras these days. Which is kinda weird to me - as a little bit of an "old timer" I still view the 84-89 Carrera as a "late model" car. But it really getting to be an old timer now, with the newest example almost 14 model years old, and the '84 almost 19 model years old. And, the cars are starting to show their age, a lot are daily drivers and show it. I like my current SC a lot, and I liked my '86 Carrera a lot. I found them to be very similar cars - although my early SC does feel a little lighter, the Carrera had better throttle response. Both are very good values for the money - but a really, really nice SC is probably the best value because the market has them priced pretty low. A doggy SC can get $12K, but its hard to get $16K even for a really mint, really nice SC - which is easily worth $4K more than the $12K dog. |

1966 912 coupe. No sunroof, 3.0 liter, narrow IROC body, carbs, MSD, headers and custom exhaust. Why? because that's what I have.....and it's only 2100lbs ;) All kidding aside my favorite thing about my 912/911 is it's simplicity, no power options or other conviences to get in the way, it much reminds me of hopping into a stripped down racecar except with carpet.

Toby's post is eloquent and accurate. I understood every word. I see some folks are in denial. The Porsche 911 SC absolutely dominates in the all time world wide value-for-your-buck category.
I do expect to hear from the longhoods here. Theirs is a subjective but powerful case. Indubitably. |
