My car has a slight fuel smell all the time. I've checked the hoses by the filler neck and at the top of the fuel tank, no leaks there....removed the metal tray under the tank and there seems to be a leak before the fuel pump (very slight though) The only reason I know it's leaking is because the tray has a stain on it. No visible leaking.
Also when I turn on the A/C fan....the fuel smell is really strong. Where does the fan pull the air from? Anything else I should check? Thanks!

It's been a while, but when we were troubleshooting my a/c blower fan, I seem to recall it was just above the fuel tank in the smuggler's box or just behind it. It sounds like your fuel smell is coming from the front of the car. It doesn't take much of a leak to make it smell. Next time your tank is real low on gas, jack her up and replace the line (costs less than $1.00) from the fuel pump to the tank, maybe snug up the banjo fitting on the fuel pump too. Since gas evaporates pretty fast, you may ought to check near the a/c blower motor immediately after a hard drive.

I would say check these 2 things...
Smugglers box. Maybe run some cleaner though there. If some gas somehow (stress somehow) go into the smugglers box this will cause the smell to come from there. If you look under the car you can see the drain hole from the smugglers box. I can see mine from just looking under the car. I dont know if it changed over the years. Also check your gas cap. I resealed mine and it fixed it right away. Good luck

Carreras are notorious fuel leakers!
Do a search before your car is BBQ'ed.

I'm w/James on the gas cap seal..my '77 had a couple of different cap seals available..not the easiest to pinpoint if it is the seal...also my 911 has a gas tank expansion tank under left fr fender w/a bunch of small vulnerable hoses going in/out.. I don't mind the smell of gear oil, but gas fumes can be a PIA/at least.........Ron

Check the burb tank. There will be a line from the gas tank to a black plastic box behind the dash drivers side. This box cracks with age and that's where the smell comes from. The smell is stronger with a full tank. It costs about $65 from a dealer. It happened on both our '73's took me awhile to figure it out.

Also check the fuel level sender. The gasket there can dry out and allow some vapor to escape. Make sure there are no leaks from the pump area. Run the motor while the car is up in the air and check the area out closely
good luck |

I'd suggest the fuel level cylinder as well. After pulling mine once I was getting a strong scent of gas and when I check the nuts on top they weren't as tight as they should have been. After re-tightening no more smell.

Have also had leaks twice from the large rubber hose that connects the fuel filler to the fuel tank. Worth checking while the carpet is pulled out.
