How long to warm up 1989 911 Carrera before driving?
Hello, I am new to owning a 1989 911 Carrera as a daily driver. Rebuilt engine, 200,000 miles on odometer. What is the correct amount of time to let vehicle warm up before driving in 20-30 degree mornings?

I don't warm up my car at all. I start it and as soon as it's running smooth off I go. Usually less than 15 seconds. (78 SC)
But I'm not so sure about really cold mornings. Maybe a bit longer but I wouldn't sit there waiting for the temp needle to register. Just drive it gently until the temp needle starts to move. Warming up a car was more important back in the carburettor days IMO.

What you don't want to do is let it sit and idle. I am looking at a car that has been idled a lot, and it is a serious dripper. 30 seconds to a minute, and drive. Don't hammer it until you see the temperature start to climb.

Don't warm up. Drive right off and keep revs to 3-3500 until 140F. Full chat at 180F. Approx.

Hi
|
Regardless of cold or warm mornings, I start it, let it run for about a minute, then drive. I keep the rpm to no more that 3000 until the needle gets past the warm-up bar.
(310,000 miles on my 3.2, never been rebuilt engine.)

Why does idling a car lead to oil leaks?

Per PAG owner's manual it states, Drive Off immediately, keeping RPM moderate (under 4K) for 5 mintues or temps are up to close to operating temps.
But it is your car do what you like :-) For me I drive off upon start up.

Thanks guys!!!!! I was doing it all wrong, was waiting until needles moved a bit only because a NON Porsche mechanic thought it needed lots of warming due to oil cooled only. How does warming up too much cause more oil leaks? About to fix those too!

Yep.
Start the car. Oil Pressure? Check. Drive off. Keep RPMs below 3,000 and shift very slow and gingerly until the temperature needle climbs past the "warm up" bar.

30 seconds, keep the revs down until I see the temp move a little.

Hey newmexico, don't fix any leaks until you drive it a few thousand...they tend to fix themselves if the car is driven regularly. Your mechanic was probably telling you to get it up to operating temp before driving hard...needle close to first bar.
