Painting the Free Targa: orange or silver
well got back an estimate from Kevin, the one that did Jacks car too.
so anyways...he checked the car out...and while the car being painted properly with a 3K paintjob, it was stored outside for about 5 years...oxidized, dings, scratches so Kevin has suggested the whole car get painted...I was gonna stay with silver if it was just a touch up color sand and re-spray the new panels, but looks like I need to paint the whole car. so this begs the question Glausurit Silver or Tangerine Orange I think Silver is classy, but how many times in your life do you get to own an Orange car.... audrey hepburn or porn star hmmm...I am 24 years old...that might have to factor into it Also in the orange car I plan a black interior and in the silver a red...so the orange car would be less work...plus I have a set of perfect black/houndstooth sport seats I am gonna buy...so I wouldn't have to redye those... anyways vote away... I would stick with the original color that the car came out of the factory with if you only plan to shoot the exterior. Repainting with a new color intails alot of work to be done right. Door jams, inside hood and storage area and any where else the silver paint is. I have seen some nice repaint jobs on the outside of the car and then notice the original color in areas that were hard to get to. It just takes away from the appearance of the car. If you are gutty the car for a complete metal restore and reshooting the entire car then go for what ever color strikes your fancy.

Silver is a very nice color, as long as the car doesn't see a lot of "sun exposure" time. As you said- it had been painted nicely before, but it went away. Without meaning to offend others with silver paint jobs; unless the finish is in terrific condition and detail, it is a harder color to sell when the time comes. (not as bad as Brown though!)
10 years ago we had two exquisitely detailed turbos- one red and one silver. The silver one had better mechanical details- cams, intercooler, etc. The red one had 4 buyers outbidding each other the first time we put it up for sale, the silver took 5 months to find a buyer! Of course silver has come around again as a popular color (just look at all the benz and bmw around) Go for the orange- it's period, it's unique, and as a 911T with non original motor/ trans, the value is certainly not hurt because of lack of originality |

It's obvious from your description which one YOU want.
Just make sure you get the trunk, doors, jams, etc neatly done.

I've always liked Saffs's green. What was that, lime? Viper?
Or you could do Hi-viz Yellow: http://www.aerostich.com/isroot/riderwearhouse/DirectPages/highviz.html

Orange...but I prefer signal to tangerine. Another color I REALLY like is olive green...very few around, but stunning, especially with houndstooth interior.
I own a silver car, so don't go saying I'm being a homer. Not sure if I agree with TRE about the resale, as I think silver is a popular "classic" color that holds value well. BUT, silver paint jobs usually have issues, and they are pretty much impossible to match if you have to respray part of the car. Signal orange will be period, cool, and easier to deal with. Plus orange is the new black. |

I say orange now.
Get a silver one when you're 50.

When I got my SC painted from brown to silver I couldn't find the silver I wanted. I could see it in my mind, but not on the color charts. I saw some at the car painters and said "THAT'S the silver" and he said it was just straight, out of the pot, PPG silver. I selected 980 grade for the twinkly bits. Too fine and the car looks flat and grey like a Merc', but the spray painters like it because it's easy to use. 980 is the second to most twinkly in their range so the car kinda glows at times. Also I got 15% flip control. this is how the silver chips lie in the paint. If you don't have flip control the color looks different from different angles.
The great thing about unmixed silver is it doesn't need to be mixed for repairs ![]() Is this ok 930Chas? |

You have great taste and instincts MJ. Both color combo's and interior schemes will look great and period correct.
I love silver. My favorite early porsche color for it's classiness, and the fact that it is the official German Racing color. It is also timeless. But the Orange on the other hand, is so dated that it's cool again. Something you don't see every day, and so period correct. Tough call. BTW, does anyone else think "Painting the Free Targa" sounds like an early '70's Folk Ballad by the band "America" ???
