What sort of Engine Oil?

Just out of curiosity - What sort of engine oil does everyone use in their 911's? I hadn't considered any other then Mobil 1 15w/40w but as you know its pricey stuff. I have read earlier posts which mention Shell Helix or Magnatec oil - any thoughts?

Also why is to really thin oil not suited to these engines?

Regards
Richard

Air cooled engines need more viscosity because of the heat generated.
In general...a water cooled engine will run a little cooler and the heat will be more evenly distributed.
With an air cooled engine...there are hot spots all over and higher viscosity oil will carry this heat away without breaking down as quickly (will still break down...just not as fast).
I use 20W-50 all year round.with good results (dino oil)...oil changes are usually 3000 miles or 5000 Km and change the filter every time.
The cheapest oil aroound here is from Canadian Tire...surprisingly good....and since I change regularly...not as expensive.
I don't recommend the cheapest grade...but their middle of the price range grade is OK.
The point is: choose a supplier...choose a grade...change often....enjoy!

I simply do not use thin oil in cars. 10w30 is not not good enough. Weather is moderate here, so I use 20w50 all year. I've always liked Kendall, but recently discovered something I had heard about but was hoping it was a lie: Kendall has changed formulas and is no longer green. So, I'm done with Kendall after loving it for nearly 30 years.

The other oil I like is Valvoline Racing. That stuff is different. Compare using the screwdriver test. You'll see.

Be aware that some oils are not petroleum based....(could be an oil leak problem)
Eg.....Castrol "R" ...made from fish oil...smells like it too.
It is my understanding that the old bi-planes used it....that's why the old pilots were so "loose"...they sucked in castor oil during the flight....LOL
I remember Kendall being green...but some time ago.
I have always liked Castrol....their GTX brand is good.

In the SC 20-50 Kendall GT-1. I will be switching soon to another brand, to see if it helps my oil chugging motor.

In the CAB 15-50 Mobil 1.

I would use Mobil 1 in the SC as well, but I'm afraid of the leaks I woul find .

Yeah, and if you believe that I can also tell you that Mick Jagger is still a virgin. I guess I shouldn't be so poopy about this, but I have loved Kendall for a long time and this same change took place year ago with another favorite oil of mine Quaker State. "Pennsylvania Grade" crude oil is the best there is, according to the petroleum engineers I have heard from. Quaker State used to be made from that, and it had a green tint. QS is no longer made from Pennsylvania Grade crude, and is no longer green. And is no longer in my engines.
