I have done some searching on this topic but it is still unclear... apparently at some point Porsche changed the design of the oil level sender for the 911 and Pelican makes some comment that you must use a later style dipstick with the new style sender. Either an interference or oil level issue. I can't seem to find clarification on what part number sender is the new style and what dipstick can be used with what sender. My car in question has an early tank, 1970. Here are the part numbers I have found:
Senders: 901 641 541 00 Sender (66-72) available at PP. Is this old or new design sender? 911 641 541 02 Sender (73-89) available at PP. Must be new design? Will it fit an early tank, ie. 1970? Dipsticks: 901 107 770 00 Dipstick for early cars. PP lists as NLA. 930 107 731 00 Dipstick (73-80) Can this dipstick be used with early or late sender? 930 107 731 01 Dipstick (74-80 w/ late sender, 81-89) I assume this is the dipstick to use with the new design sender. |

There seems to be a few discrependies in Pelicans Catalog.
According to the PET, Porsche Part Catalog Oil Level Sender 70'- 901 641 541 00 '72,73'- 901 641 541 00 PP $157.50 4 in Stock '74- 80 911 641 541 01 NLA '81- 911 641 541 02 PP Lists for '73 in catalog? Don't know why. Dip Stick 70-71 901 107 770 00 NLA '72 911 207 041 00 NLA '73- 911 107 731 01 Not in PP catalog '74- 930 107 731 00 '78- 80 930 107 731 00 PP $30.75 w/original sender 6 in Stock '81- 930 107 731 01 So, If you have the original dipstick and need the sender, they have them avaiable.

Thanks Ed. That is part of the problem. I don't have the original sender or dipstick. I had to buy the tank as is, basically stripped down. I probably should have mentioned that so it would be more clear. So if the new updated sender, 911 641 541 02, will fit an early tank then I can buy it along with dipstick 930 107 731 01 and be done. If this sender will not fit the early tank then I must buy sender 901 641 541 00 but since I don't have the original dipstick can I use one of the other dipsticks available or do I have to track down a used dipstick? Thanks for the help.

Have you tried an ad on the Parts forum, or try the Early 911S Registry?
#11 in this ad is a possibility MFI Parts, CDI, Oil Coolers, Thermostats, Oil tanks, Mufflers, TTG fog lights I may not hurt to call Pelican and ask. They may have an idea if the old sender works with the new dipstick.

Thanks Ed. I'll try to call Pelican tomorrow. I have not tried any used parts options yet. If it turns out I need an original dipstick then the search will begin...

I just did some searching on the newer senders and dipsticks. There is no clearance problem with the new and old dipsticks and senders. It seems Porsche changed the Oil level from original. When measured, the full mark on the new dipstick has been lowered from earlier ones, and the new sending units are calibrated lower. This would indicate full on the gage with lower levels.
Maybe Porsche has decided what many owners discovered, run with the oil no higher than halfway between the 2 marks. When filled to the high mark on the older dipsticks, oil was drawn into the intake.
