Question Wheel Locks?

Any recommendations (or not) for wheel locks? I know they won't stop someone who really wants your wheels, but should stop the casual thief from walking away with the Fuchs.

Best is to take Dana's advise and I recommend keeping it in the garage and locked. Otherwise if they want it, they will get it...

The only wheel locks I use anymore are the factory ones. Part number is 993.361.057.00. About $60 at the dealer.

Thanks, Tom. I was leaning towards those. I assume that they are black and look like the regular lug nuts for the Fuchs wheels.

Yes, and most importantly, they WEIGH about the same. Some of those bulky keyed locks are heavy and can throw off the wheel balance.

These are the "keyed socket" type, where you need to keep the special socket with you or you will be hard pressed to get a wheel off if you have a flat. They can be easily defeated by a determined thief, of course, but will keep semi-honest, mechanically inept people from stealing your wheels, anyway...

Does anyone happen to know where I could find an extra 'cap' that goes on the end of the locking nut? It's not a big deal, just curious, and I don't want to spend the $60 for a 3 cent piece of plastic.

I can send you one. PM me with your address.

I think Porsche wheel theft is pretty rare. I think questions about removing broken wheel locks are a lot more common.

How many versions of the factory wheel locks are there? I had problems with getting them off and was told that they were revamped with more reliable mechanisms. True?

When installing my Turbo Tie rods I had to resort to the brute force method of wheel lock removal - two of them were rather stubborn, and on the third, the key broke off inside. Let's just say I'm in the market for replacments now...

RickM & MM83targa:

It sounds like you guys have/had the old style factory wheel locks that actually used a key to remove a round sleeve. Those are lousy, and have been superceded with a much better design. The new ones require (and come with) a special socket to remove the locking lug nut (as ttweed mentioned), with no key required. Not only are the old key-type ones prone to breaking and hard to remove (properly), they are about worthless as a theft deterrent. Anyone with a set of pliers can have them off in about half a second. So, in other words, get the new factory ones!

I am not sure what type of wheel locks I used since a friend gave them to me for free.

The nut hat little holes in its circumference and you had to use a special key that was hold in place with an aluminum sleeve nut. On that setup you could use the regular 19mm socket.

To cut a long story short first the aluminum sleeve nut started to disintegrate and finally the pins on the key part broke off after I removed three wheels successfully. For the forth wheel I had to use Mr. Drill to get the damn nut-thing off.

Porsche Crest

I have a nice '85 944 parts car i bought... but i dont have the key to remove the wheel locks, so i cant switch a pristine set of phone dial rims ... its the type with the spinning outer sleeve, and an actual key (not a socket) to remove the wheel lock... i would have banged a socket on, then spun it off with a ratchet if it was the older type... but since its not like the older type im lost... i know some people drill it off... but where on it do i drill and how big a drill bit... how deep do i go... i just dont want to have to chisle it off and ruin a perfect... and i do mean perfect set of rims

Well it prompted me to answer... lol
i got brutal i taped around the hole on the rim, and took 4 12 point sockets just smaller than the inner lock piece and whacked it on... took forever for each one but once i got them on, i was able to use a breaker, and they came off...
