915 trans 4 speed or 5 speed
Did Porsche ever make a 915 4speed trans, if so what was it in.

Yes, as far as I remember Porsche made the 915 in both 4 and 5 speed during 1972-1977. The exact years may be incorrect. Better informed will chime in.

Ok I am building a 3.3 turbo motor for my 1980 911, I want to use a 930 trans. This guy told me that I needed this 930 shifter. It does have a 4 speed ball on it but that does not mean much. I paid $200. I went to clean it up today and noticed it has this number 911 424 019 05 something don't seem right. This is what I got for $200.

The 930s had 4 speed boxes until 1989. Pretty stout pieces.
The guys in the turbo forum here can offer much more advice on how to set it up and what parts to use.

One of the beauties of this place is Wayne has all the part numbers for pretty much everything loaded into his parts system. You just go over to the shopping portion of the site and plug in the part number. Results for your console are that it is for a 70-73 911, not turbo. A turbo shifter would have a 930 part number.

Came right up for me. Regardless, I know this from memory. It's not the right part.930 shifters start with 930.

I've got a 4-speed 915 as well, shift pattern isn't the same though, reverse is top left. 915 shift linkage with a 930 shift knob I'm guessing?

Mine was the same pattern just with no 5th gear. Was hard to believe at first we kept trying to stick it in.
Mike Gokey local Porsche tech found it in an old book he had they actually made quite a few.

It was standard on 72-74. Starting in '75 4spd was optional and 5spd was US Standard. Either '76 or '77 they stopped even offering it in the States but ROW continued to be offered it.

We have since parted out much of the 4 speed box but I remember it had different gears than the 5 speed and a 7:31RP
Too much RPM drop to be a good box for the track but guaranteed no 5 to 2 downshift!

The part number shown in the picture may be a casting number. The real number for the part ends in "06". The PET doesn't show a number for that part in the 911 Turbo pages (1975-1977, the years the 4 speed was presumably used), although the part is illustrated. It shows the part in the '74-'77 911 pages, and in the SC pages, and they all show the same part number.
Just because the car is a 911 Turbo (which many folks outside than the Porsche organization mistakenly refer to as the 930) doesn't mean all the parts are exclusive to that model and are numbered as such. For example, the 911SC engine case has a "930" part number. In fact, a complete replacement long block for an SC is a "930 100 204 00". The "930" nomenclature for factory replacement engines continued into the 3.2 series. The rather bold statement that "930 shifters start with 930" is nice, but not borne out by reference to the parts catalog. The Cap'n Last edited by The cap'n; 11-21-2014 at 09:22 PM.. |

The 911.424.119.05 is the part number up to 1973. The 911.424.119.06 part number for the gearshift bracket was not introduced until 1974. It is impossible for this shifter to be from a turbo since they weren't made that far back. You are correct that the bracket for a turbo would have used the .06, though the complete assembly carries the part number of 930.424.017.04.

930 reverse is left and forward. Don't recall for certain but I think the lock out tang is under the black plate not on top.

The shifters for 70-72 MY were for the 901 trans and had a steel , not cast, body. The shift pattern for the 901 was different, as the reverse gear was above first gear in the pattern. Even though the 72s changed to the 915 trans they retained the older style shifter.
So the shifter shown must be for 73 MY or newer. BTW, my 71 owner's manual does not mention a four speed option for the E model.
