I Can't Believe They're ******* Cracked!!

While my suspension is apart getting new bushings and stuff I thought I'd lavish some care on my wheels today. So I get them all clean inside and out with P21 and what do I notice on BOTH of my rear 9X16s?!

The inside of my right rear.

The outside of my right rear.

The inside of the left rear.

I can't believe my 9X16s are TOAST!!! These are the genuine article to.
I wonder if this crack explains the strange clicking I was getting from the right rear wheel. It would only occur with weight on the wheel. The rear suspension is apart getting new bearings anyway, even if it was the cause.

The winter list gets longer, and longer, and longer.....

Sucks big time. Sorry for you. Please resist the temptation to have them welded, as Tyson said, better find out this way.

Not only cracked, but indeed, toast. I would'nt use them. It is good you found out about them before it was too late. They should make a great coffee table stand!

You can say that again! Man, I am so glad they didn't let go while on the track. That would be ugly.
I can't beleive that it has taken me so long to notice them.

Beleive me, I have no plans on trying to fix these, as my car has and will see (thinking positively now) much track use in the future.

Were they ever chromed?

I had a 7 crack in almost the same place (about 2-3 inches higher than yours). They had been chromed by the PO - I understand that can make them brittle and susceptible to cracking.

To bad it had to be Nines!

Unhappy

They are (should say were really) factory original finish, no chrome as far as I can tell.

There was an article recently in the PCA racing newsletter about this....

Let's face it guys, most Fuchs are getting old...Old alloy's can get brittle. I found the same problem.

Make me wonder what Vintage racers are going to be doing 10 years from now, I guess shelling out huge money for HRE Fuchs replicas...

You can't even GET the older cheaper replicas anymore...

SO Pelican-heads... CHECK YOUR FUCHS!!!

checkyerfuchs...

Here were mine...

Chris,

Sell them on Ebay as garden hose holders. You might get someone to pay for damaged rims. To prevent anyone from trying to repair the cracks, drill a couple of holes in to the rim so they won't hold pressure.

Unfortunately I am not in the financial position to replace them at the moment, all my dough is going into the new suspension, and trans/engine mounts, and oil lines, etc.....

I was thinking about making an air hose reel for my garage and a clock if I can find someone who is able to cut it in half for me.
I wonder, what would someone pay for a Fuchs hose reel?

Just trying to make the best of it.

Sorry to hear it. Thats the problem w/ aluminum. It will crack rather than bend. That's why people buy steel or ti bicycle frames.

It could be worse
