Bill I have seen the pics of that RSR before, Intereresting how they built in adjustment to the exit orifice of the cooler.

Im not to worried about the trunk space, my car is track only , and I couldnt fit the 10X16's I plan on running as fronts in the trunk:D

For all the reasons Chuck stated his -16 product may be the best way to go.
Currently there are many 911 race cars running -12 oil coolers w/o problems.
My B&B -12.

Bill,

That's got to be the worlds biggest whale tail. Just look at the size of that gray extension wing ;)

Hell you could probably use that thing for shade when your in the pits too :p

Imagine the downforce he gets with that thing.

Regarding the adjustable exit duct on the RSR hood:

I bet they experimented with different angles of attack to arrive at the highest vacuum (low pressure) generated by airflow over the leading edge. It'd be interesting to tape tufts of yarn around the front end to see how air circulates past/around the body and cooler exit at speed.

GT-Racing Narrow Fender RSR Front Bumper

Didn't have time to lift the car up and take a JPEG. But ran home to measure it for you, Moses.

From the screen to the front of the tub is 3 3/4". That's what you have to use for the cooler and the frame.

Back to work.

Moses 10-15-2002 08:35 AM

Thanks, Cary. Looks like I'll have at least an inch for airflow behind the cooler. That should work at speed. The Carrera cooler with fan should help on bad traffic days.

cary 10-15-2002 11:49 AM

Hopefully I can push it out in the light this afternoon. Then at least get you a front end shot. Because some of the cooler can hang below the tub and still covered by the bottom of the bumper. Which will give you great air flow.
You'll better understand it when I shoot the picture.

The RSR is owned by a local fellow, Steve Bauer I've posted pics before. It's a beautiful example of an early SWB RSR w/ many trick/interesting features.

The tail is a standard long IROC item w/ a plexiglas lip.

The cooler exit is adjustable because you don't always need to flow the same amount of air thru the cooler and the down force on the front end can consequently be enhanced or not.

B&B coolers are available in -12 or -16 w/ straight or various degree of angle on the I/O ports. As w/ their headers just tell them what you want and they will(or at least did) make it.

Hi Bill,

My feeble attempt at whale tail humor may have been too subtle. It looks like the canopy behind the car is an extension of the tail.

On the -12 restriction issue, a bit more explanation may be in order. The external thermostat has a bypass valve that opens to allow oil to flow around the cooler in the event flow is restricted through the cooler.

This is a failsafe that prevents oil starvation if the cooler becomes plugged or the oil lines get pinched off. Of course the oil isn't cooled, but at least the engine is lubricated.

Even when the cooler is flowing oil, if it is partly restricted due to pinched oil lines or excessively small lines/fittings the bypass will begin to open and bleed some oil around the cooler. The result is reduced oil cooling, and an overworked oil pump.

This is more of an issue for track cars because they are running at high rpm most of the time. The engine moves more oil at high rpm and restriction in the external cooler system becomes a problem.

This is why some people say it is okay to use -12 on a street car, and -16 on a race car. Porsche shipped -16 equivelant fittings for all cars from '72 on, so they obviously thought this was the correct size.

I recommend anyone retrofitting go with factory-type or -16 fittings.

Hey Chuck!

I ordered your "widemouth" Carrera cooler (from Pelican, of course) and I plan on running it in series with a 20" B&B nose cooler. See any problems with low oil pressure?

Moses, here you go. The bottom panel is fairly thick. It will take a pretty good beating.

Moses,

Thanks for the order! Your cooler left my shipping dock this morning. I like the "widemouth" name. Or maybe "Bigmouth".

I'm not sure what you mean by problems with low pressure. The "widemouth" was a good choice for series coolers given its high flow capacity. Did you go with -16 on the B&B?

Moses 10-15-2002 07:29 PM

Thanks, Cary.
That looks like plenty of room! I'm feeling cooler already!

Moses 10-15-2002 07:32 PM

Chuck,

Not sure which B&B I'll get. I just specified a 20" X 5" X 2 1/4" cooler with straight (not angled) fittings. Have to wait to see what shows up!
