wiring help

G'day all

im putting my wiring harness back into my 76 and its in pretty bad shape

i have removed many unused wires like old stereo, alarm.

some of the original wires are burnt , however the car was running ok and all functioned ok before removal.

im after a picture of a fuse panel showing the wires attached so i can try and work out which wires should go where.

also the five firewall plugs next to the steering column what is each plug responsible for and if possible which hole in the plug for which application.

i do have a wiring diagram but having a bit of trouble using it

Where are your pictures, labels and diagrams from the wiring removal?.....
If you have the factory wiring diagram you are ok, but you're going to have to wire trace every wire to confirm location and designation.
I can help explain the diagram for you.
Here is a good resource for learning about euro wiring. Save the PDF and print it.

Some info I posted can get you started in this thread:

I hope you have a lot of spare time on your hands.

I can't compare my LHD to your RHD for the plug locations, you are going to have to figure out where they go based on length and ability to reach the ignition, lighting switches and other dash area mini harnesses. Perhaps someone with a RHD car will be able to help with that part of the puzzle.
Do you want to have a seperate thread for this, or carry on with your rebuild thread?
here we go

G'Day Dennis

thanks for the explanation document i will study it

im also a bit hesitant with the wiring schematic as its from a 78 sc not a
76 s

i do have pictures prior to removal, but i dont trust the previous work.

many of the fuse terminals are broken and lts has loop wires picking up power

also i think some of the damaged wires have been replaced rather than repaired
that is run externally to the harness

i have the time and the patience im just in the beginning faze or wiring so looking to get a head start.

if you have the time a will pm you with any specific questions i have as i find issues i cant solve myself.

regards Michael

Hi Micheal,
PM's are no problem, just may take a little time to respond due to our time zone differencs. It's 1:30 AM here right now. Posting in your thread works well too as others can chime in and everyone can benefit.

The wiring differences for the '78 are minor. Download the diagrams and compare to what you have. Porsche didn't change much over the years. Good to learn from at a minimum.

You may be better off getting a better used terminal block or upgrading to a modern fuse block if your's is too far gone.
Fred Cook makes a very nice panel that he sells for a fair price:
ATO Fuse Panel...Last call before Christmas!
Or you could source the parts and build one as others have done.

Good night, I need to rest up for the Thanksgiving Turkey feast tomorrow!

Go to an electrical store and buy a couple of books of cloth sticky backed wire maker numbers and letters, you're going to need them...

so far so good

thanks to all the advice and guidance received here i have made a good start and have a good grip on reading the schematic.

i have been working on installing the gauges, mostly i have been able to follow my removal pictures and double check against the schematic.

clock Done
speedo Done
Tacho Done
oil level\fuel gauge Done

however struggling with oil pressure\temp

firstly my removal pic is at best poor but i have attached it anyway

i have also attached a drawing of the back of the gauge showing what i have attached so far being the

illumination globes
gen charge light
oil pressure indicator light

it also shows the 3 spades on each of the pressure and temp inputs

the back of the gauge also shows a, + and G terminal on each of the pressure and temp inputs.

below the drawing is a list of the left over wires (as best as i can see from the pictures as the car is not with me to check)

if some one could confirm which wire goes to which input and also confirm if what i have attached so far is correct

regards in advance Michael

I would not use those terminals, they are know to break the wire after a while due it's poor design. Better use the ones to crimp.

Better this ones:

PS: I do not mean the connector itself, only to show the way they are crimped

you may be better off splicing the wires like splicing rope or with crimp butt splices and then solder with a shrink sleeve over each splice. Try to keep the final overall diameter as small as possible. Also, splices should be staggered so as not to lay on top of each other. That is what I learned in the wiring harness splicing in fighter aircraft.

Also, when working with wiring harness, do one wire, one circuit at a time. Don't let the big bundle of wires confuse you. One wire at a time.

The advice you just received from proffighter was priceless
Those connectors you have are less than useless.

Try and do this one time " the right way

Send a message via ICQ to HawgRyder
There are ends available that look like little tubes.
You crimp these on to the ends of wires that will end up going under a screw or similar connector.
They crimp on to protect the ends of wires from fraying.
If you check out electronics supply places...you will find many interesting types of connectors, numbers, and terminals.
In some cases, I have used interim or mid circuit blocks (in stainless) for wiring projects.
The idea being to give you a point to check or connect to a circuit in the middle (or some point) in the circuit run.
If you ran (as an example) 20 wires from front to back...from one numbered block to the other...then #1 would correspond to the same # at the other end.
In doing so, it makes adding lights or sensors very easy because you don't have to run a wire from one end of the car to the other.
It's an extreme example...but you get the idea.
Most of all...use hangers or clamps to keep the harness from moving in relation to the chassis (to prevent chafing).
Have fun.
Bob

With only my '78 schematic to look at, I think so far you are correct.
From the '78 schematic, bottom row line numbers 85-96 have all of the wire colours and destinations for your gauges. The + terminals are for the red and black wire(s),power supply.
Read the item description for G11, oil pressure indicator and figure out what wire runs to it, I believe it will land on the terminal marked G.
I sent a PM to another '76 owner that just wired his car to see if he could provide a picture and/or description for you.
Good luck.

Tassie Targa,

Dennis tells me you need some help...here goes.

I have a 1976 911s and have quite a number of photos of pretty much everything as I have been coaxing my car back to life. I suggest you look through my posting as this has a lot of what you are looking for. The later pages are where I did most of my electrical work, but you might find some of the earlier pages useful.
1976 911S – from garage find to on the road

I have found the schematic for the 1978 good, but it is missing some stuff which makes it difficult, so it isn't perfect, maybe 85% correct.

Ok here are some photos of the other gauges:
Oil temp and oil pressure

Fuel gauge and oil level

Fusebox

I can do better with the fuse box, but is was about 0 C outside so I had to work fast. Let me know what you need.

Been awhile

Ok it's been awhile since I posted in this thread.

But here is where I'm up to.

New fuse panel made and connected, removed dodgy connectors and replaced with crimp and heat shrink, as per the advice received here.

Been over and over the fuse panel to double check, with help from Timmy 2 new engine harness aide and fitted, engine running now on to the alarm, central locking stereo ect.

Stereo working, still to fit relays to headlights,

Extra fuse panel fitted for alarm ect.

So today was about connecting the plugs to sockets under and behind instrument panel.

But broke multimeter so that slowed me down, first connection had right hand turn signal operating wipers WTF so I guess it's down to checking continuity to match plugs to sockets.

As I have metioned before the wiring prior to this restore was a mess.

So even though I was ready to break something today tomorrow will be a new day.
