Ah Hah! You probably have a leaking Oil Thermostat O-ring. Trust me. It could be a leaking oil cooler seal, or even breather plate gasket or something. These things are all located on the top of your engine. The breather is in the center but your target is the thermostat which is on the passenger side near the oil cooler...like I say, on the top of the engine. So that means that the shroud has to come off or up, or at least that grey piece in the corner needs to come off. It's an easier job for me to remove the engine for this, but your MFI system is not as big. If it were me, I'd take a stab at changing that o-ring and perhaps the oil cooler seals without removing the engine but you're probably removing it now. The thermostat is a cylinder about half the size of a beer can, embedded into the engine case at the base or side of the #6 cylinder. I think perhaps there are two 10mm nuts there, and it slides up and out. I think three nuts hold the oil cooler on, Maybe four. You might have to at least lower the engine a bit. Loosen the tranny mounts and remove the engine mount bolts. disconnect stuff, particularly at the front of the engine (fan side)..the plug on the firewall behind #3 cylinder. I'll bet you can get it.

I wish I could do more than send best wishes today. I'm driving distance of course, but busy today.

Skip...I did an oil cooler only drop on my'77..new type O-rings are an upgrade from my original ones..there is a procedure for correctly testing the cooler..probably spent as much time on BS as it would have taken for a full engine drop..I may have done a partial drop for access/don't remember..I do remember using grease to hold O-rings in block..new eng oil coolers are big bucks........Ron
