My 73 rsr inspired build thread (finally)

Hey guys ,
now I've finally started this project I thought I'd share it here .
Progress will be slow as it's a long-term project , but expect an update at least ne every 2 years :D

It's basically a 73 that ended up as a race car .
I bought it from don at Aircooled classics in Knoxville once it was retired from racing .
My plan is to build an rsr-esq hot rod road/track-car this is heavily influenced by its racing past .
Think of ear-plugs , bad backs , and regular dental appointments ....

Here is some info from when don had it for sale .
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/223510-911-turbo-race-car.html#post1935678

And here are a few pictures of it .

Last week I did a blue-tape mock-up

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psd95c81e5.jpg

The fibreglass rear arches are going onto a buddies sc track-car

Here is the finished mock-up with steel rear flares .
I'm going for an all-steel tub with fibreglass bolt-ons .
I'm still deciding what to do with the doors .
R-style fibreglass with lexan on straps , or rs style with door cards and winders .

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps9c8e6968.jpg

And upto now gulf colors is the latest paint scheme , so we got a feeling of how it will look with the interior painted the same .

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psf6fa701f.jpg

ian c2 12-13-2014 03:15 PM

Today , a fibreglass arch came off and my buddy took it to trial fit on his sc .
If it will work I have to clear my garage in preparation for us removing the other arch next week .

nice

ian c2 12-13-2014 03:28 PM

I'm relatively local to you , in Laguna hills .
So anytime you wanna come by and drink corona whilst looking at it , your welcome .
(This is what I gave been doing the last couple of years rather than working on it )
:D

It was supposed to be stripped and ecoated , then back to me with the underside painted ready to make it a "roller" by now .
But I'm still drinking corona and looking at it

axvel 12-13-2014 04:03 PM

Sure i'll swing by one of these sundays. I'll PM you for the address when i'll be heading your way.

bhmkv 12-13-2014 04:15 PM

Nice project!

ian c2 12-13-2014 04:53 PM

Thanks !!

I've been eating to do either a 73 or 964 wide-track car for years .
After missing out on a couple of 964s this came up :)

The plan is to have a classic looking hot rod with a 964/993 powerplant and g50 and a few nice period parts . Nothing extreme like the checkbook guys , but just enough ;)

ian c2 12-17-2014 04:11 PM

The last couple of days have seen a flurry of activity !!!

Yesterday I removed a Sebring mirror and drilled the rivets off an aluminium doorcard .
I think I found an old wasps nest ?

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...psb4625e40.jpg

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps6e38dbda.jpg

And today I drilled out some rivets in the rear seat panel .
Only to find out it's welded underneath
I should have looked first , but that would mean getting on my knees in the layer of dust on the floor :)

I seem to remember this car when it was still here in Knoxville? I think I have some pics of it...

ian c2 12-17-2014 04:52 PM

Post them please mike !!

IROC 12-18-2014 03:52 AM

I looked at this car a few years ago at Don's shop here in Knoxville. Below are the pictures I took (sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures)...

Thanks mike .
Some of your pics look familiar .
Did you forward them to don ?
I have some in an email from him somewhere with similar pictures .

IROC 12-18-2014 11:14 AM

I never forwarded them to Don. Probably not the same pics...

ian c2 12-18-2014 12:46 PM

Well it's definitely the same car and the same concrete blocks !! :D

ian c2 09-17-2015 06:28 PM

It's been a while .

I've still done nothing on the car

It's nowhere near getting painted in gulf colours , so in the meantime I put this together ...

So , another 2 years have passed ....

I’ve actually done something !!!

1 : didn’t upgrade my photobucket account .
2 : had Tyson round for a beer and talk about the project .
3 : sold the ducktail and suspension as we decided on a different plan .
4 : drunk a sh+t-load more beers in the garage looking at it .

I also kinda wrecked a 997 and a Boxster , just to keep the Aircooled guys happy :D

And .... erm ... that’s about it

Expect another update in 2019 . ;)

ian c2 10-29-2017 07:39 PM

There’s been movement ....

I modified the dolly to take new casters and it ended up about 6” higher .

So bought new taller jackstands and got it back on its dolly this week :D

That also meant I could get to all the storage totes that were crammed in between the car and the wall .
Lots of fishing tackle , 964 parts , and 9 years old carp bait in there ..
That’s now going in the storage space above the garage .

Today , I painted the wall behind it white and looked at new led lights .
It’s dark , dingy and not very motivating in there ...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1509334754.jpg

Tomm0row I’m hoping to get the rest of the fishing totes up the ladder and into the attic , and take that turbo kit off the roof of the car and sell it .
I should have done this 5 years ago when I sold the car it was due to go on ....

ian c2 10-30-2017 05:16 PM

Allthough I was busy , Nothing of real interest happened today .

However ....

For those wanting to make their workspace a little more tolerable , this might be of interest .

I found 4’ Led strip lights at Home Depot this morning .
Come complete with screws to flush mount , and 6” hanging cables , pre-wiredwith 5 feet of cable and a plug , and have an outlet on the other end to link upto 4 together .
For only $25 each .

The white exterior wall paint was 20 , so for very little money you can get a nice brightly lit workspace .
White floor paint is going to cost me around another 60-80 bucks ...

Below are : before / with 1 wall painted / and after temp fitted 6x led .

Before .

One wall painted semi-gloss white .

.
And after fitting led ..

1 year 2 months later .
Time for another progress report ....

Erm .. well ..
I drunk beer and looked at it a whole lot .
Had a few other pelicans in the garage ... (this mainly consists of “will be cool when it’s finished . Want another beer ?”
Bought some more parts for it .
Built some seismic proof storage shelves .
Started building a tool-box workbench on the opposite wall .
Painted another wall .
Painted the ceiling black .
Hung more lights .
Tiled half the floor .

One picture didn’t work , so my 2nd update in a day !!

We be another one in about an hour ....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547419010.jpg

THIS is why I am installing a new front panel !!
I’ll be taking a grinder too it as soon as it’s in , but the hole won’t be THAT big ..

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547419010.jpg

Two hoods .
One with lights , and one without .

BOOM. !!!!
Another update :D

This 93 just arrived home .
I’ll have to check for exact dates , but it’s been at the paintshop for around 6 years .
Yeah , my projects allways go sloooooow ....

This one’s pretty simple :
Suspension , brakes , wheels , interior , and rear bolt-ons .
But it’s been that long , the gas and battery has gone bad , so maybe a year and I’ll be driving it

That blue tote in front of the 73 belongs to jack sachete . Www.jayceevw.com
Inside it is the 2176 drag motor he worked on for my 56 that’s now in the driveway .

I really should get that back in the car , then he can have his tote back ...... 10 years later !!!
:D:D:D:D:D

Flojo 02-14-2019 06:00 AM

funny... the "good" car is all dirrrrdy... the "bad" car is kinda clean :D

ian c2 02-14-2019 06:34 AM

Yeah :D

A feather duster got rid of all the dust it collected during it’s temporary stay at the airport.

And the 73 is currently a mobile storage tote for parts for the 93

ian c2 04-12-2019 07:30 PM

BOOM !!!

rear body work finished !!!

I wish ...
I simply hotbolted on some parts so I had 2 less cardboard boxes in the front room

Looks like progress though .
Especially if I’m not wearing my spectacles and walk into the garage before turning the lights on :D:D

ian c2 04-23-2019 08:41 PM

Strange happenings over the weekend ...

My progress on my 93 and my thread in the 964/993 section kinda died through lack of activity the last month or so ....

the Buddy of a buddy powdercoat dude hasn’t been in touch to say cabinets are ready , and the buddy with trailer that is handling logistics appears to spend every spare minute taking his toys to the dessert and getting drunk .
so no point calling powder coat dude to see if cabinets are ready as I have no way to get them home even if they are .

Cannot do anything on garage project as don’t want to move 73 around .
Cannot to anything on 93 project as 73 in the way .
Cannot do anything on 73 project as it’s too close to 93 .

People call this procrastination, I call it logical progression of planning and schedule

However , I Kept myself occupied though as the Sun is out , the pool is warming up , and bud is on special at Ralph’s . SmileWavy

But here’s the strange thing ....
Sold my fibreglass 73 rsr fenders and used the cash to buy metal 73 fenders to weld flares onto .
Hotbolted onto car just to get them out of my living room and have been admiring the colour the last couple of weeks .

Bought some original cibie hoodlamps sight unseen on Friday afternoon .

Spent the weekend getting drunk and cannon balling the pool , then on Sunday pushed the 73 to one side to photo the date/vin sticker and while I was there decided to decode the paint plaque .
Courtesy of early S register it came back as special order silver .

Never bothered doing this before as
1: I’m lazy and slow .
2: it was allways going to be painted gulf (man city) blue .

Then yesterday evening the hoodlamp parcel was waiting for me at the front door .
Cannonball , beer , dinner .
Then opened the parcel ....

They’re painted silver !!

It’s a sign from god

It’s probobly still going to be gulf blue , but now I’m looking at having some silver somewhere as a hint to its past .
Maybe the underside , maybe the interior roof section , maybe whole interior .
I haven’t decided yet , And will no doubt take 5 years to accomplish this minor task .
But , just like some of the ugly welds will be left as a sign of history as the cage is modified , I’d like to have some silver on it somewhere .

I read somewhere the silver martini cars started off white so had white interiors ?
so don’t think a different colour inside will be too bad .
Plus , I’m never selling it so devaluation of its market value due to this is no interest to me whatsoever .

Just looking at the hoodlamps again , and looking for info on the angle of the lens ...

Is this something I need to change to get the lenses vertical , or are they fine as they are ?
Also , if they stay angled as they are is there a certain side they need to go on to get the best light pattern ?

Also pictured is the repro cibie hood-lamps that pelican sells . The lenses on this pair are vertical (also have different markings to my set)

Can anybody give technical info on the hoodlamps I have please ?
I’d like to write notes and put them in the box before they go into storage , as it’s something I’ll forget about in the coming years until they’re ready for install

can't charge storage if they are just not working on the car because of their own issues. I suspect it was mutual otherwise I don't see it going that long

Mine started churning oil around 7000 rpm , hence jacks involvement .
2176 is a great number .....

Nothing much to report here , but I figured while I was updating the 964 thread I’d update this one too .

Allthough I’m not actually working on it , I’m still spending too much money buying parts for this car , and that’s about it .
