I think 225 front 245 rear with correct aspect ratios are the popular wide choices. I have 245 front 315 rear though.

a 9 inch wheel on the back of a narrow body is the widest you can go, I have seen 9.5 but they are cram,ed and tens just will not go under

I have 225/50-16's on the front and 245/45-16's on the back. Wheels are 7 & 8" BBS. The left front fender needed to be rolled slightly. The only rubbing problem I had was with the stone guard on the oil cooler in the passenger wheel well, and this only happened in reverse with the wheels cut hard left. A little application of a pry bar fixed this problem.

While 225 & 245 is the correct answer for widest tires. You can mount up to 245 front on 8" 1986 951 Fuchs and 265 on 9" Fuchs. You need nice stiff torsion bars or they will rub higher up in the fender. Some of the racers do that. For civilian use I would stick with the 225 & 245 though.

The biggest i've seen on an SC/Carrera body, is 245/40 on 8x17 front and 275/40 on 10x17 rear(PCA racing use only). That said there is a continuum of problems associated with increases from stock.

Variables in the body/tire/wheel/suspension all will affect what you can use on your car.

The largest wo too much trouble is around 225/45x17 on 8's(~+24 os)fronts, and 255/40x17 on 9's(~+15mm os) rear. Each step up from there(f or r) will require lip work, oil line work, grinding trailing arm nuts, camber mods, torsion bar upgrades and or mods to front struts.

I use 235/45x17 on 8's and 275/40x17 on 9.5's, they required quite a bit of effort to get to work properly.

Also keep in mind the effect on gearing of a tire with a larger diameter. You will want to stick with a static loaded radius of ~11.6" or less, unless the car has a surplus of power.

The largest wheel/tire combo that will fit on your car with the heavy duty race suspension mods Bill talks about is:

Front : 8 1/2 x 17" custom 3 piece wheel with 245/40-17 Hoosier
Rear: 10 x 17" custom 3 piece wheel with 275/40-17 Hoosier

This is what is pictured below on my '72 911T at SCCA Solo2 Nationals last week. The car has RS flares similar to your SC, and the fenders have been rolled flat. The spring plate bolts have also been shaved , and the '72 oil lines have been re-routed for everything to just barely clear the large Hoosiers. The wheels are Fikse FM-5s - Jim Fikse will know what offsets are necessary if you decide to max out. You can contact him at www.fikse.com.
