Happy Crab exhaust from Instant-G anyone tried it

Hey Everyone.

instant-g provides 3.6 engines to swap into earler 911's. i am waiting on Steven to get my engine ready (i'm sure it will be a hand full of weeks which I'm 100% on board with)
him and i have talked about the happy crab exhaust and wanted to see if anyone else has one and how they like it.

1 does the enxhaust drone at all?
2 how loud is it? comfortable for daily driving?

any other input on this.
the price on it is good and i would like to support him if possible, just wanted to see how others have liked it.
thanks!

Wow! Over a grand for a Magnaflow muffler and some 304 stainless tubing. Looks like a Magnaflow 11385 or 11386 which is commonly available for less then $100. So less then 4' of 304 stainless tubing, 2 flared flange connections and 2 shiny tips works out to over $900? (Out to the garage I go!)

I ran the Magnaflow 11385 (2-1/4" tubes) on my B&B headers and it was WAY too loud for me. (But I don't like loud either...) I switched back to a similar Dynomax with one outlet plugged and an 8" glasspack on the open outlet. That was a pretty good reduction in sound. Idle is very reasonable and when you get to about 2800 at full throttle EVERYONE knows you are coming. (It has a very distinctive sound. Sounds higher pitched like you are winding much higher RPMs.)
I got a number of comments on the Targa Baja from other drivers who wanted to know what I had in the car. When I passed them when they were pushing past 100 mph and they could hear me you know it is making an impression!

I think the Crab would be nice for the track but on the street I think it would sound something like, "You-hoo Mr. Officer... Give me a ticket over here please!"

PM sent to you. I have a 3.6 with the Happy Crab in my car that Steve installed. I'm happy to talk with you more about it if you're interested. In my opinion and for my ears it sounds fantastic albeit on the loud side. I drive it daily all summer and get many compliments on the sound. Sound quality of course is quite personal, but I love it ..

I talked to Steve about the happy crab but decided to go another route...M&K. I have to warn you that it is loud. Ben @ M&K can do a bunch of different outlet configurations and he has a jig to fit 993 Bischoff (oval outlet) heat exchangers. I wanted muffler tips below the bumperettes. I plan to add some car chemistry inserts in the hope of quieting it down. Our host sells M&K as well -- under $800 I think.

I have a 3.6 conversion as well and used Steve's wisdom and parts for the install. The happy Crab is very well built with much thought went into the pipes, etc. The actual muffler (Magnaflow) is open right through side to side (pic below) and I'm pretty sure you could roll a golf ball through it. I love the sound and have been told many times at the local DE's that I have the best sounding car out there. Drone at highway cruising is another story. My solution was to plug one outlet for street driving and just remove it when at the track. I now have the best of both worlds. Street driving with the plugged outlet is only slightly louder than my old stock setup on the 3.0. I couldn't be happier and after 3 seasons everything is still working perfectly.

Tom

Engelbert,

Very nice as always!

I'm not sure if I've asked - do you get any drone with this exhaust setup?

I also built my own as many others have.

The 14" (#11386) Magnaflow boxes are great for the money and if you can weld then you can build yourself a good performing exhaust very cheaply.

964 Engine rebuild questions

The flip side to the Magnaflows are that they are noisy and do drone. They also corrode even though they are stainless it isn't a high grade.

They give excellent performance but as with so many things you do kinda get what you pay for.

Personally I wouldn't want to sink $1000+ into one, I'd either spend less and make it myself or pay a bit more and get a better quality exhaust.

Actually, my car is one the the quieter at the AX events.

Here is a video from one of the runs at RIR, never mind the cones at the end at the finish, LOL.

I consider drone and volume two different things. I've heard loud cars with zero drone and somewhat quiet cars with annoying drone.

IMO many aftermarket 2 in 2 out exhaust systems that include a crossover (in this example the muffler is the crossover) have drone.

I guess one way for me to find out for sure is to come drive your car!
