Windows hard to crank!
The car is a 70 T. Window felts are less then a year old. The windows are getting harder and harder to crank up and down. Do I lube the tracks? I am afraid I am going to break the lifts if I don't fix this.

Yup...same here....wind-up windows...so hard that it broke the pivot on the mechanism.
Tore it all apart....made new pivots ...reloaded the spring helper...cleaned and fresh grease everywhere. Now they are just peachy!! Bob

While cleaning and lubing, check to see if the helper springs have failed. There's a spring anchor pin that often fails. I obtained a good used old style regulator from Parts Heaven in Hayward, California; I believe it was $50 complete with a good used glass mounting channel (my channel was mangled due to a rigged repair by a PO or their mechanic); there's a 15$ core charge if you don't have an old regulator as they have a guy who rebuilds them. i installed new window channel seals and it was an effort to roll up. took the advice of dave hillman and used silicone spray directly in the channels and now they are smooth.

A search on the topic will bring up a few ideas and remedies

I haven't got into the doors on my P (yet)
But I had a taxi company some years ago and I fixed a lot of doors and windows. Be careful were you lube, think first if it's a small wheel that runs in a runner DO NOT lube the runner and wheel. it will cause it to slide. it will work fine for a short while then your window will cant because your wheels will develop a flat where they skidded and didn't turned. Those assemblies are not cheap on any car. you can lube all the other bits, even a drop on the axis of the small wheels is ok as long as it doesn't get to the runner. Having said all that I expect somebody will post and say P door are not like that. If so please just disregard this post. Jeff 911T |

Many things you can do with the panels off: perform a Search and get a full list. Consider also door jamb reinforcements (ask Superman about this). Must tighten door latch mech screws as well...do the Search and have fun!

I took off my left door panel last week because my window would no longer go down............
It turned out it was not the spring mechanism but the piece that holds the seal and window that connects to the support bracket. Watching the window mechanism work, the window support bracket came off track and got wedged into the window track. All I did was take the seal off at the bottom of the window, glue it to the window and then glue the whole unit (window and seal)into the support bracket. It worked just fine for me. I also lubricated the arm mechanism, spring and everything that appeared to move!! Personally, I think that whole door is a pain in the butt, because if you strip one of those hex bolts that hold the arm rest on to the door frame, your screwed!!!!!!!! I put plenty of anti-sieze on to avoid that problem in the future..... Good Luck Bob 73.5T |

...forgive my laziness regarding searching for the answer...but how do you get to all the nooks and crannies for lubrication. 2 summers ago I took panel off to fix what amounts to pretty tough tugging on the window crank to get the window to close the last 3 inches. I got it apart put couldn't figure out where to aim spray etc. What am I missing? How do you get the whole window regulator thing out to clean the whole thing. Am I making any sense? John F, we mailed about this years ago, how pathetic is that...i still haven't fixed it.

I used one of those red plastic hose type attachments to WD-40 and Silicon lubicant as well as white lithium grease. Once you have the panel off you can direct the spray to the top of the regulator spring while cranking it up and down to lubricate the mechanism. For the rails I used a long q-tip and some vaseline on the channels................between all the lubricants you could slide 20 feet along my garage floor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I know why that plastic cover sheet you have to remove and re-glue makes sense!! Let her loose.......................slop it up.... Bob ![]() |
