Dropping a 3.2, to do list?
Hi guys. My 84 is having it's 3.2 dropped this winter. Thoughts on things to do while it is out? Here is my plan so far:
- extensive detailing (including intake plenums, fan shroud, fan). - SSI and M&K 2:1 install - new fuel lines (trying to get in touch with Len for these) - cut airbox to cup style (PO drilled) - Heat backdate - new cam oil lines - valve adjustmet - Reroute spark plug wires over fan (not S style) - clean engine bay - repaint engine surround tin - new sound pad - extensive reseal Any other thoughts? Would like to do new vacuum lines (is there a good source of all the ones I would need?) |
Do vacuum lines and have the injectors cleaned.
Reseal triangle of death. Adjust valves |
Inspect clutch and replace parts as needed.
Inspect and resurface or replace flywheel as needed. Inspect clutch release fork for cracks and replace if needed Upgrade the CHT sensor if the original is still there Replace soft rear brake lines. Inspect starter and alternator. Replace intake manifold gaskets and torque bolts. Air leaks there will lean out the air/fuel mixture and may cause damage to the engine and will fail smog in CA. Easy and inexpensive fix/maintenance!;) |
Another item to consider is to re-anodize all the fasteners and other small metal pieces so they have that new gold finish. Sometimes, the Worth clamps used in various places on the engine can be re-plated (anodized) as well

Also, inspect the engine bay rubber seals that seals the engine sheet metal to the body of the car. Replace as needed. If done like it was at the factory, the new seal has a top part and bottom part. The top part goes onto top of the sheet metal. The bottom part goes on the underneath the engine bay sheet metal.

Thanks for all the info so far!

The oil pressure switch on the back of the motor

FYI, in the tech article section, there is information regarding the replacement of the clutch assembly.

crank shaft seals front and rear,
plugs, rotors, caps, rear suspension arm bushings, AND obligatorily a pic of you in the engine compartment with a beer |
Just had my 3.2 out. In addition to your list (BTW - it's a good list), may want to check clutch/flywheel, clean injectors, replace o-ring seals on engine oil cooler and check the engine support/mounting bracket for cracks on the ends.
Have fun. :) BER |
I replaced the speed/reference sensors when I had my engine out. The wiring on the originals literally came apart in my hands during their removal. heat, oil leaks, and age make them pretty brittle. Replace them and they should be good for another 30 years.

Awe. F it. Just do a top end while ur in there!!

GS, I recommend you add one of these to your "to do" list! :D

Inspect all engine harness and injector wiring for brittle areas that may have developed cracks and repair or replace.

Clean, clean, clean and clean some more. Just when you think it's clean, clean some more. That job never seems to end. I'm not doing this but I considered splitting the case just to make cleaning that much easier.

My suggestion would be when you're done with yours, come to Ohio and help me with mine.

Also, torque your intake manifolds... |
Back to your list, how are you planning on re-routing your spark plug wires. I am trying to get the wires back to their original position on the fan shroud of my '87, but have not found a really good solution.
Thanks |
