Should engine & trans numbers match?

Numbers for my '85 Targa:

Engine *64F03571*

Trans 915/73 74F 03521

Should I be concerned that one's a "7" and the other's a "2"?

Thanks in advance and Season's Greetings to all!

Bill

I bet that a few of the 1985 US engine types were fitted with the 915.72 transmissions with an oil cooler. The serial # range for those are 73F 00001-10,000. I say "I bet" but not sure if the Euro/ROW type 72 could be imported.

The 74F XXXXX transmissions were made up of type 68 and 73. Type 68 appears to be a spill over from 1984 inventory or a mid model year change to the type 73.

See PDF page 522-ish for the engine and trans types.

Did Bob's awesome response answer your question, or were you asking whether they should be the same number?

I don't think so. It's pure chance when they drew an engine and gearbox from the pools with the same number.

Maybe with just in time ordering they keep a smaller stock and it is more likely to happen?

Thank you. I got so wrapped up in the numbers I did not directly answer Bill's question.

Awesome? Thanks. Truth be told, I am frittering away time when I should be finishing up this old Jetta suspension. The more elaborate the answer, the less I have to lay on my back.

Just was wondering if they should be the same or just close...thanks to both of you for the info.

No, we would not expect them to match; that is not how things are done at the factory. Engines and transmissions are grabbed at random provided they are the correct type for the order being processed. I'd say that there has to be an error in that chart above; types 68 and 73 cannot have the same serial range.

"numbers matching" is an American thing. The Germans use books and records. But buying a COA doesn't mean it's always accurate.

Germans ain't what they used to be.
