Another enthusiastic 1st owner thread
 

Hi Everyone,

I'm picking up my first 911 mid-January and thought I'd drop a note and say hello to other enthusiastic 911 owners.

I'm getting an absolute sweet deal (buying my Dad's car) on a 1983 911SC Coupe with whale tail (in Ruby Red Metallic) with only 41k miles on it. I'm really excited. It was my Dad's "sunny day, once a month" car. He's unable to comfortable drive it anymore, and it's been sitting in a garage with the battery disconnected for almost twelve months.

I'm going to fly in, get a new battery and an oil change, and cross-country it from NC to TX.

At this point, the only thing I'd like to do with it for modifications is put a new muffler on it to better appreciate that flat-six sound, so recommendations are appreciated. It's bone-stock, so I was thinking an M&K.

Anyway, I read another thread with someone traveling to pick up a car, and thought it was cool that everyone was tracking his trip. Seemed like a virtual safety/follow-me tech crew. I knew then that the camaraderie on this board was real, and I look forward to taking part.

Wish me luck. I'll be on the road January 12th or 13th.

M&K is a solid choice, not much else built to that level for the car.

One additional thought, check the date on the tires.
If not new in the last 3 years or so, you may want to put fresh sneakers on the car prior to driving back home.

Remember to check to oil ONLY when the engine is fully warmed up at idle on a level parking lot.

I presume if your dad owned it he knows all those things and can teach you the basics.

Have him show you the heater and AC controls before you drive off.

Welcome to the insanity. On new tires you may want to consider "All Seasons M/S tires". They have softer rubber than summer tires and they stick to the road like glue. I got Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S tires a few years ago and I am very happy with them on California roads, summer and "winter".

Start it with the engine lid up, take a good look at the engine and under it while it warms and note any smoke, leaks or crazy noises...

Drive it around a bit (close by) for a long enough time to get it fully warm and test how it shifts, brakes and handles the rev ranges... Go back to to your Pops house and let it sit a bit till cool again. Repeat the process again and make sure all is well before embarking on a long trip. Best to you and your Dad !

p.s, how's the spare ? Is there a jack and toolkit ?

+1 on M&K muffler. Also recommend premuffler. I have that combination on an 82SC and it sounds perfect to my ears. ALso I was impressed with the customer support before and after purchase.

+ 20w-50 on the oil. You actually MIGHT want to have that and the filter purchased ahead of time on PP or Amazon or whatever and sent to your Dad's place. Depending where you are, it might no be off-the-shelf available.

If this all seems like too much, I'm already in North Carolina. I could drive it down for you and you could use that plane ticket to send me back. ; )

Sounds like an awesome 911! Many, many of us here would love to find/have just such a car. Don't go too crazy on that slope, but if you do, keep all the original parts in storage. The top value is in originality, not that you have any inkling to sell this heirloom!

+1 on doing a full check-up on the car before it goes cross-country. If the car has truly been sitting for 12 months, there may be some things that need to be addressed in addition to oil (old fuel, sticky brakes, brake fluid, vac hoses, mice...).

And don't forget to save every part you ever take off the car. At some point, it will pay off to have all the original stuff.

Congrats! If you really want to enhance that flat-six sound, a set of SSI headers will bring the car to life and really enhance the sound of tune for the exhaust.
