Alternator removal from Fan housing
This should not be as difficult as it has. I have searched the forums. I have applied heat, kroil ( about five times), I have reversed the bolts and beat on them, pounded the Front(rear of vehicle side) of the housing against 2 2x6's. For some reason I cannot get this alternator to budge. This is a 1976 2.7L 911. It has been sitting for quite a while. I do have the fan off.
So what am I missing? Should it really be this difficult any other suggestions. ![]()

Though there was nothing holding mine in, I also remember the alternator being very difficult to remove from the housing. I always assumed it was just because of dissimilar metals corroding. I'd continue being patient and use more Kroil, heat, and gentle tapping. Avoid the temptation to hammer on the mounting bolts as they will easily gall and bend, rendering them useless.
I don't remember how mine eventually came out, but I was eventually successful, and didn't have as much of a problem on my next car, but it was tough on my old 75 911S.

Tom,
There are some threads that address the removal process. I followed one and with a little coaxing it came out. There also is a technical article that discusses the removal process. Good luck Bob |

I remember it being stubborn, but I think it loosened with the 2x4 pounding.
A little propane heat on the housing to get it to expand will probably help.

Use the John Walker method found here:
Fan hsng, alternator removal EDIT: I just now realized from your photo that you ARE using this method. maybe try the angle and rotation tips that JW offers.

Tom... here's 27 year-old fan housing. Is possible the "press fit" of alt into housings is to blame for their stress-crack deterioration. Took new housing to shop and had it lathed so alt is now tight slip fit. Took 2 minutes. Good investment.

Tom, I took my fan housing and alternator off recently and found that the long screws seemed to have somehow "tapped" into the alternator housing, so much so that one of them actually broke inside the alternator when I tried to unscrew the nut off of it. That may be what's preventing your screws from coming loose.

I had to do this in a motel room this fall. Get two 2x4s and set them under the fan housing spaced so that the alternator can drop freely. Lift the fan housing/alternator assembly in the air and drop it onto the 2x4s. The alternator will drop on the floor leaving the housing sitting on the 2x4s.

careful, when I "pounded" mine out I damaged the alternator and it cost me a $100 for a rebuild.
