See attached scan from the 'Red Book' by Paternie, the VIN is correct for a 1976 Targa, but the engine number looks like it could be from a 1976 Coupe? I am far from an expert. And the Red Book does have errors.

Note that for those who do not have access to the Red Book, all the serial numbers are also listed at the end of the PET manuals. The PET can be downloaded, but I forget from where? Possibly direct from Porsche?

Slightly off topic, does anyone know what the heck PET stands for?

Thanks

The VIN decodes to a 1976 US version S Targa and the engine number is consistent and falls within the range of that model and year--targas and coupes both fall within the same sequence of engine numbers. If you find the engine type number, it should be 911/82. The only way to know if that engine came from the factory in that car is to get the COA from Porsche.

So even though the red book above shows the targa with 665XX - 656XX it could have been 646XXXXXX? Thanks

As I stated, I am no expert, and the Red Book can be confusing. Below is a screen print from the end of the E_911_77..... PET (covers 1974-1977), direct from Porsche. Does not appear to differentiate between coupes and targas. Again, I am no expert.

The '76' in a column by itself is for the year.

As long as I am here, for those of you who want the parts catalog (PET), go to the link below, in the "choose catalog' box, select your year and model. A separate window will appear, wait for it to load, save the PDF.

The source I used, which may be in error but I have found to be pretty reliable, shows the 656...to be California only and the 665...to be 3.0 L engines. Perhaps the footnote in the Redbook (the "1") clarifies those engine numbers. It also states the same engine number sequence was used for coupes and targas.
