Oddometer Gear Question
Hi Pelicans,
I have been researching this topic and have found lots of very good articles and reports on this forum that have given me the confidence to put this job onto my ever increasing list. Thanks to all of you that have gone to the effort to do this. My speedo is functioning well but the oddometer has been showing signs that there may be a knackered gear that needs replacing. I have already spoken to my mechanic about this and he says that it is a fairly 'normal' thing to replace on a 1977 911S. So, my question is...... 'Is there a difference between the mph and the kph gear?' Are they two different parts or is it the same part but fitted in a different orientation? I have seen from photo's that there are two profiles of teeth on these gears. My mechanic mentioned that you can just rotate the gear around so that it picks up on the other teeth, and this determines whether the Oddometer shows mph or kph. My German is far from perfect, so I thought I would post the question up on here. Any answers, comments or advice are as always very much appreciated. ![]() Cheers, Jason. |

The gear is not reversible.
You'll need to count the number of teeth on the gear to get the correct one. I would think MPH/KPH would be geared differently.

That's correct........

Your mechanic has probably not rebuilt a speedometer or odometer. Determine the size and number of the plastic gear for replacement. The replacement gears are in color coded identification system. See PP parts catalog. After you have your speedo-meter out of the car, this is about a 15 min. - 30 min. project. Pete is correct. Tony |

Thanks for your comments guys, very much appreciated.
My mechanic has definitely rebuilt speedo's etc before as I have seen him do it. The problem here is my shocking German language skills! Not the first time it has happened and definitely won't be the last....:-( I will check out the parts catalogue and get one ordered. Cheers, Jason. |
