If the alarm is set, what shuts down? / No start.

I'm having a no start problem. The engine will crank but won't start. I was wondering if the alarm can activate unexpectedly (original alarm, but I have no key)?

What I have done so far... (not in this order)

1. Changed DME relay.
2. Opened ECM (checked for burnt or loose connections)
3. Powered fuel pump by creating a bypass at the DME relay plug (fuel pump runs when relay is bypassed, but does not run when key is turned).
4. Pulled spark plug checked for spark (no spark)
5. Have power to coil but no spark (replaced coil, didn't help)
6. Cylinder Head Temp. sensor is within Bentley specs.
7. Tried bypassing alarm by making a loop at the two #61 terminals on alarm unit. Will try this again if all else fails (may not have had a good connection.

The last thing I did before it stopped running was removed my gauges and turned them so I could see them better (wondering if I armed the alarm some how)

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give as much info as possible.

Any ideas? The weather is starting to get REAL nice here.

On my 88 (basically the same car) I had the SAME problem. Turned out to be a broken solder in the DME Unit. Note, this is in the actual computer, not the DME relay. I'll try and find the thread on my problem (maybe search under "88911coupe") and there are a lot of explanations from helpful Pelicanheads on how to find it. Try to avoid paying $1,600 for a new one!
Good Luck

Why did you have to remove the fresh air box to turn your gauges? They pop right out the front by hand.

I'd recheck the wiring on the back of the gauges. If the Tach wire is grounded, you won't have any spark. (Should be the black/purple wire.)

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions.

Buck, I had read your post in the past and that is why I removed the EMC (brain) to look for burnt or broken solder joints. Will look at it again (closer) if I don't make any head way.

Tyson, I removed the fresh air handler to try to bypass the alarm. The gauges were allready turned at this point. Could you explain farther on how I can tell if my tach is grounded?

It took me a couple of times to be able to see it. My over 40 eyes aren't what they used to be. It's hard to see the crack...you really see a SLIGHT color change in the solder on either side of the crack, also faint. I soldered mine back but it does not look as good as the orginal solder and I get a rare cut out now and then as if it may be weakening or recracking.
Good Luck
