993 engine problem...
(I posted this in the 993 forum but got no response)
Hi folks, one of my clients cars is a 1980 Sc in which I have installed a 1995 3.6. The client called me up and told me that all of a sudden, the car started to run rough and smoke, both whitish blue and black. I told him to immediatly stop the engine and wait for me to go there. I got there about 15 minutes later and when I started the car, it ran normally, and didn't smoke at all. I left it idling for about 5 minutes and it was ok, so I drove it back to my shop. It drove well until I got there, when it started to miss at idle and low rpm, it was running on 5 cylinders at low rpm but above 3000rpm, it ran fine, but smoked a hell of a lot. It smelled very rich and oily, so I figure the number 2 cylinder was just pumping oil and fuel. I checked the plugs, fouled but otherwise fine. I replaced them but still, cylinder number 2 didn't work. The engine was not making any knocking or ticking sounds. After about 5 minutes at idle, the smoke stopped and the engine settled perfectly. The number 2 cylinder started working again. What can this be that it pumps oil intermitently? Very strange. Maybe the injector is sticking open and flooding the cylinder, causing oil to pass between the rings and cylinder???

Update, the car ran well all weekend, but this morning took very long to start, as if it was flooded. Once running, it smells very rich, slight black smoke, all cylinders working, idle is jumpy but the power is all there and no white/blue smoke. Very strange that it will burn oil intermittently.

Mike,
I am assuming this is an OBDII Non-Varioram engine. How many O2 sensors are you running? What is the ECU and wire harness situation? I have a 96 Varioram 993 engine in an 84 and I am just starting to get things worked out. The problems you list are also some of the issues I have had. Email me privately for further discussion. I am currently working with Ken Farler of Farlers performance in Ohio to get my issues corrected. Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems really knows his stuff with regards to the 3.6 transplants. |

Hi Todd, thank you very much for the reply, but the 1995 3.6 is an OBDI, not OBDII, and I installed it last year. It ran great for over 20,000kms. The problem just started.
Thanks
