Alternator w/ external regulator convert to internal regulator?
I am in the process of replacing my 79 SC alternator which appears to have an external voltage regulator according the Bentley manual. It also recommends upgrading to the newer style alternator with an internal regulator.
My question is, is this necessary and does it require re-wiring? Also, I am told that the alternator may need to be pressed out of the fan. Is this true? From what I can read, it does not need to be pressed out. Thank you! |
If you have your existing alternator rebuilt there is no need to convert to an internal regulated style.
Search for the John Walker drop method for removing the fan with a couple of pieces of 2x4. If you do change to the internal VR you just unplug the one on the rear fuse panel and leave the black wire disconnected at the alternator.(tie it back and tape it up) |
Keep the external regulator, much easier to plug in a new one if needed than removing the alternator to replace the voltage regulator.

As Timmy2 wrote, you can just have the original rebuilt. If you decide to go with the newer internal type, here is the Tech bulletin.
