Instant G Crate in middie?
Do any of you know if you can put a 3.6l crate into a 1974 Coupe w/ a 915 transmission?
And does anyone have experience with Instant G? I am just trying to evaluate options on replacing my 2.7. |
I know for a fact that you can mate a 3.6 to a 915. Not sure about any fitment issues with a 74 chassis. By that I mean, that it can almost certainly be done but there's probably a list of things you need to know about and work around a bit to do it.
PM Grant (Uwanna) for some advice. He put a 3.6 in his SC back in the '90s before it was a common thing. He's been trying to convince me to do the same. :) I seem to remember reading something about Patrick Motorsports doing that job too. Somewhere I saw a list of all the modifications that were needed -- don't remember if it was here or on their website or someplace else. |

using instant-g's conversion kit and one of his motors, i was able to swap the 3.2 in my '87 for a 3.6 and have it up and running in a weekend. there are still some small things to do (like mounting the second oil cooler), but it was basically plug and pray.

You'll need to buy a load of conversion parts anyways,there are a lot of pre 80's cars with 3.6's

Yes definitely doable - I have a 3.6 with a 915 (although a later, stronger 915 with the 8/31)

Instant-G installed a '95 3.6 crate motor with Varioram added for me along with a second oil cooler. Steve does quality work and provides excellent support as well. The increased power and torque (especially low-mid) transformed my driving experience.
As a bonus, the exhaust sound is fantastic and addicting :) |
What did a drop in 3.6L cost you guys?

3.6+915=$$$ Be prepaired to reinforce your 915. Clutch, bearing retainer plate, reinforced diff side cover, heavy duty (possibly longer) second gear, ideally robust 3rd gear. Since all these engines are now getting old and in need of rebuilds (at least many are), have you considered simply rebuilding the 2.7? Henry Schmidt @ Supertec did mine with RS pistons, Webers, and some S cams, and it makes nearly 200hp at the rear wheels.
However, the Motronic fuel injection is sweet! |
This conversion is also on my Porsche bucket list and I plan on giving Steve a holler when I am ready.

Had his motor over ten years. He's good and delivers. He is slow, crusty 'tude and his exhaust systems are way over priced. Other than that, carry on.....
