79 930 rear seat install, need some help.
The Previous owner of my car had the carpet replaced with a kit from pelican Not even sure which one I'd have to check the paperwork.
But the place he used to do the work removed the Original Carpet on the rear seat so the "turbo" script was gone. I found some used rear seats from a turbo on and I'm putting them in now. I'd rather have correct worn carpet than the wrong carpet. Anyway after removing the seats I found they decided not to install 4 screws and washers on the corners of the carpet/vinyl flap that covers the rear tub. I can't figure out where this elastic strap should screw to my old ones with New Carpet did not have this strap. I also don't see where it might have attached to So can anyone tell me where that middle strap should attach?? even if is supposed to go straight back or perhaps it stretches to one of the screws on the side?? I know it doesn't sit limp doing nothing Does anyone have a photo of their rear seat area semi apart?? I looked at the parts breakdown and it only calls for the two screws and washers that attach the sides of the carpet flap to the rear pan. I found the part numbers for the screws but it seems the washer is NLA. Anyone have a possible cross reference or a photo? Is it the same washer that's found on the rear shelf? I am not even certain that the rear shelf hardware is correct I have two different lengths on my screws. It's very similar to the ones I have seen In Ferrari interiors. I can get those all day long. Maybe a VW part number? Thanks Johnny Last edited by phrogs; 01-29-2015 at 01:20 PM.. |

yes
I've had the real shelf on my 77 reupholstered and it had no 'center strap' on it. Everything else was pretty self evident and intuitive. Bill K

Here's a Better photo of what I am referring to.
This is the passenger side rear fold down seat, the flap of carpet and vinyl is folded over the seat to show the elastic strap (the screw driver is under the strap) The rear shelf is totally removed, the fold down seat is mounted. I know someone knows where that strap attaches? haha ![]() |

I've never had a car with that strap, including a couple built in the same era as yours. Maybe the strap is not original?

Did you ever Yank out the rear shelf and the seats? That carpet actually goes under the rear shelf.
I'm lost I see no reason for someone to "add" these, both upper seats have this elastic strap. |

Crazy, I have no clue why they would have been added? Maybe they are from a really late car. But the pieces are riveted in. Looks factory to me, not some hack job to the hard backing material that is between the carpet and vinyl.
Do you happen to have photos of yours when you had them apart? |

I have worked on '87 and '89 Carreras that both had those "support" straps in the middle of the folding portion of the rear seat back.
They are secured with a tapping screw and finishing washer at the center just like the tapping screws/washers that hold the corners of the carpet. The new carpet kit I installed from Autos Intl. Did not have these pieces of support ellastic. All I can figure is that it helps support the center of the cardboard piece as it folds. Cooper |

The finishing washers are available through Winzer.
M4.8x2.7. Black These are metal and fully supported on the backside. Wurth sells plastic washers. Cooper |
