can a 2.2 liter be changed to a 2.4 liter

just by changing the cylinder heads ... will the 901 take the extra torque .... does the crank have to be changed ... will the mfi screw up ... or should i just forget it and go with 2.2 replacements ... the engine has been sitting a few years and is crusty ... i think but am not sure tat the cylinders and pistons need replacing and there is cheap 2.4 set available. i was going to pull them and check their condition before replacing - cylinders anyway .... any thoughts?

The crank is different so the change would require crank, rods, and pistons at least. The 901 would be fine. It is worthwhile if you can get the parts reasonably (good luck), because the stroke increase will add torque. The MFI will have to be calibrated to match the new combo. If you went to 2.4, you might as well go to 2.7, so you have to decide some point to stop spending and be happy with it.

It would probably be best to stick to 2.2 for value reasons. The cost of going bigger would probably exceed the cost of getting a 3.0 or 3.2 and putting that in complete.

The subject has been discussed alot before, check previous threads.

The heads are the same, cams same. All you really need is the 70.4 mm crank and its associated rods. How much you want to change depends entirely on how much money you want to spen and in what condition your existing parts are in. If you simply install the larger crank with the 2.2 pistons and cyl.s you will boost the compression above the value for the 2.2 engine as well as increase your displacement to 2.4 liters. If your starting out with an E or a S this is mighty nice and can make a very good engine. You should be able to get a 70.4 mm crank for a few hundred dollars depending on condition.
