Need thermostat education...

I think my '83 SC has 2 thermostats, right? One internal, finely machined thermostat and a second in-line mechanical thermostat in the right rear wheel well. ( I could easily be wrong about this.)

What are the opening temps for these t-stats? I presently have a trombone non-cooler. I am installing a Carrera cooler with fan and a B&B front cooler. The Carrera fan T-stat has a 100 degree switch. Do I need to change the other T-stats? I don't want to deprive my new coolers of oil till 240 degrees.

Thanks.

Not to worry. The internal thermostat starts to open around 180F, the external a little higher. Your new coolers should be well fed!

The internal and external cooler are controlled by the same mechanism ie the phase change of parafin from solid to liquid and back. In a model year they should be the same temp. There have been reports of variation however which I suspect are related to the timing where the hot oil doesn't get to the external thermostat untill after the internal one has been tripped for a while. Over the years the spec has ranged from ~80&degC to ~87&degC(~176&degF-~189&degF) The temperature of the phase change can only be changed by altering the chemical composition of the parafin.

The Carrera cooler electric fan comes w/ a thermstat that trips at ~188&degF this temperature can be altered electrically but since your car will be overcooled a manual switch would be as usefull. The mod consists of a different thermoswitch which is available in 110, 99 or 91&degC versions which are all available here at Pelican Thermoswitchs I would stick w/ the standard thermoswitch until I observed that there might be a problem somewhere down the road(not likely w/ your setup)

Bill,

I got the 91C switch from Pelican. Now I'm wondering if I might run too cool. Guess there's no such thing. Just drive harder.
