Defrost, fog light knob illumination?

Hey guy's it's been awhile- hope everyone is well... So, my cigarette lighter called it quits, luckily we can now buy them new as before they were once NLA. A new one is on the way from Pelican. I would like to also finally get those damn defrost and fog light switch knobs lit up, they worked long ago and never worked since, yes- this has been killing me for years LOL. Has anyone tackle this project lately? Does anyone know if all three items are wired (piggybacked) off each other? Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated!
Cheers!

Hi sabeo.m,

If you pull the ducting, fresh air blower and plenum from the frunk you can get easy access to the switches. You can get to the left two by reaching through the dash through the clock hole but you have to pull the blower and plenum to get to the cig lighter.

Hi gazzerr, yup you're right, I actually replaced the lighter with a used one long ago so I'm familiar with the installation- im not sure about the wiring of the three to get everything working properly. I never got the illumination to work again, i check the little bulbs and they work. If I remember correctly, all 3 switches are wired together. I was hoping for a picture of the back side with everything hooked up.

Let me see if I can help a little. Mine is a 1985. Here are shots from when I recently gutted the wiring and modified my car.

A shot from behind, cigarette lighter on left:

at a slight angle:

the defog switch close up:

The Black with Blue striped wires are the gauge/dash illumination power. They are daisy chained all through the back of the back of the panel.

I hope this helps!

Awesome- thank you! I know having those knobs lit up is not a big deal as long the switch works but my ocd is going nuts. LOL

It's a tiny instrument bulb, but theres a few different ones, i gotta look at the PET for the correct bulb.

Don't those switches have the little glass tube that carries light to the face? They are fragile and the likely cause of no light. Might need to replace. Please follow up here.

Yes you're right, I replaced the "luminous stick" years ago so mine are good to go. The part # is 911 613 228 00

What happens is the actual stick breaks- its a fragile piece of plastic. I just think my wiring is all backwards.

Now you've got me wondering if mine are working properly. Do they only illuminate when on? Or are they always supposed to be lit as long as your headlight are on?

If my memory serves me correctly, they are constantly lit when your head lights are on.

Ok so i got my new cigarette lighter in and working, so now my charger works- as for the other knob light illumination that is a no go for me, the main brown ground wire is fried and I'm missing one if the small spring loaded bulb holder. Only thing is, my switch wiring has to be crossed somewhere, the lighter won't work if i turn my low beams on, if they are off or if i flick the high beams then it works. I guess this will do for now.

The illumination may actually be working but the operation is dependent on a few things. They come on dim with side or headlamps. The fog and defogger then illuminate further when activated, but only if the accessory is actually working IIRC.

Thanks Jonny, i hear ya, in my case , i would need to first fix/re-wire the chard wires i have, which was probably caused by a short or in proper ground. I know if i mess with it long enough I'll get it right, i still don't have a solid reference for those 3 switches for an 80 sc. As per factory. Nothing in any service manual i have.

Sabeo ... What did you have to remove to get to the switches? Blowers and plastic tubing?

Yup the fresh air blower has to be completely removed, the tricky part is disconnecting and reattaching the small metal fast clamps on the climate control Borden (?) cables. I bought 20 of those suckers here on pelican a while back... Just in case one popped, which mine did.
