I know there have been many posts regarding this subject. Here is my problem:
My oil leak appears to be coming from between cyls 4&5. It seems to be more prominent when oil is at correct level on dip stick. It usually happens after care is warmed up. No oil dripping on exchanger so I dont think it is a return tube. It runs down the case and then runs the length of the case toward the trans where it drips. The funny part is that it does not always leak. Anyone have any ideas on what I should check. 1983 911SC 3.0L Thanks Bill |

Ahhhh....my favorite....let me guess, you also have tell-tale dual oil puddles on the floor?
It's most probably oil-pressure sensor, located behind airbox. It's sealed with plastic and usualy leaking over clutch-case. It's common and cheap problem (if you recoginize it ![]() When you're done with that, check out return-tubes, then valve-gaskets (in that order). Cheers! |

Its very easy to do.
Just remove the top of the air cleaner (10 seconds) and the CIS boot (2 minutes). You can then reach back there and feel it. With a mirror back there (and a flashlight) you can see it. With a deep socket and an extension, its easy to get to. Once you've done it once, its a 10 minute job, because you can do it all by feel. For a first timer, it may take 3-4 times as long, but its still an easy job. And, BTW, they leak ALL THE TIME! |

If you haven't already, clean the bottom of the engine off. I use one of those car washes that have the sprayer. Try to be sure about the source of the leak. Any oil under there gets blown all around making diagnosis more difficult. I'm not convinced it is the oil pressure switch but since they tend to leak soon enough there is no harm in changing it. Right beside it is the the oil thermostat. It has an O-ring that like to leak also. These twos will cause a leak in the area of #6/the oil cooler/flywheel.

My 78 leaks in the same general area, but I thought you had to drop the engine to get at the oil pressure sender???? Or am I thinking of the oil temp sender????? Thanks

Ok... how about this one. I found it the other day. The leak is at Cyl #6. I'm not sure where it's coming from... any ideas? There is some plug fouling on #6.

Looks like you have perhaps a broken head stud and that the oil is leaking on the base of your cylinder.

I was thinking head stud, but there is no noise, and all the studs appear tight.
