Filler Neck ---Won't take gas!

Just checking to see if there is any tiny adjustment that's causing this problem since my 78 came back from paint?

Had a glass out respray, front fenders off too. Now when I go to put in gas it gurgles back up after a tenth of a gallon. Babies thursty!

Other than that...love the paint

Is that with the normal 180 degree turn of the pump head ? if so something is in there, or the vent is blocked.

I would take it back to the paint shop and let them figure it out.

180 turn. Otherwise take it back and let them fix it.

+1 on the 180; mine works best with the pump hose/handle facing forward.

+1 Same here. Only works correctly if the nozzle is turned 180°

Try this.

Put the pump nozzle into the filler neck, pull the end of the nozzle away from the tube a bit (just enough so the tip just goes through the inner restriction for unleaded nozzles) and use your left hand to pull back on the spring loaded collar on the pump nozzle--the one that seals the fill opening. Use your right hand to slowly begin filling the fill tube. If the gas flows into the tank with a slow pull on the pump trigger, you know the neck is not blocked completely. Continue to hold the collar away from the neck and gradually squeeze the pump trigger to increase the flow, watching carefully so it doesn't splash out. If you can fill the tank this way, the problem is the bend in the filler neck that is notorious for making a fill impossible without turning the pump nozzle upside down or pulling the collar away from the opening, which disables the automatic shut-off of the nozzle.

I remember seeing a video someone made that was titled something like, why we love our 911 and it showed all the little personality quirks that they have including this odd method of filling a car with fuel. I had always thought it was just my car that was a pita to refuel!

I'm going to assume a repaint has not made you forget how to fill. Also when you said it gurgles back up that should never happen.
Can you pull back the carpet and see if you have a clear hose, if so you can watch the gas go in the tank?
Maybe tank is full and your gauge is off?
If you can't see then disconnect the hose at the tank and put hose into a gallon fuel container. Then pump gas full pressure and make sure flow is ok. (that will also tell you if tank is overfilled)
Could be they taped off the tip where it goes into the hose but I doubt it, that is painted also and paint pooling there would be bad.

Don't hold a match in there to get a better look

Thanks for all the replies....I've been filling these funky little German cars for over 30 years now so figured there must be something other than the usual 180 or 90 or 45 degree positioning of the nozzle. Spoke with my bodyshop guy and they just pulled the fender, and put the neck back on, no rags here, but my photo shows different. Guess I'll check the venting for kinks and see how I make out.

Cheers

Do you have access to a digital inspection camera to look down the fuel filler pipe? Or a flexible feeler of some type to probe -- gently -- down the filler pipe? A tenth of a gallon is not much, so if there is a plug it is close to the filler opening. Don't believe a plugged vent would do this after only a tenth of a gallon.

Nice video, Raymond. What is the brand of your bike rack?

Answered my own question with a quick search. It may not be the same but very close.
