Authenticating chassis numbers.....

I'm looking at an 85 convertible that has the chassis number of a Targa.
According to the owner; he says it's an authentic convertible. Claiming some of the earlier 85's were numbered with the POZZZ91ZFSI40000. Though it's supposed to be ending with 50000. Is there a way to authenticate this. I know Porsche have an authentication certificate program but it takes 6 weeks to get, and is, in essence, a certificate to wave around at club meets!
I just need to verify this is an authentic convertible!
TIA

Do you have a picture of the engine bay?

He is half right...

WPOZZZ91ZFSI40000

F = 1985

40001-41435 = Targa

The engine mount could shed some light (engine bay pics looking down the fan) on whether it was a conversion or not..

I say nonsense; 14xxxx is Targa & 15xxxx is Cabriolet.
The factory does not make these mistakes.

Can you tell by looking underneath? Isn't there more metal underneath a cab from factory?

Here is a picture if the engine bay.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425212313.jpg

That is not a cabriolet engine bay. See photo below, of a factory cabriolet:

As suspected from your first post, it is a conversion. 95% of conversion has the non cab engine bracket.

On javadog photo, you can see the damper (#18 on the diagram).
