				Can't find 4th or 5th gear?

Took the car out for the first drive since the resto is complete. Engine was rebuilt, tranny taken out but not rebuilt. No history on tranny. I can't seem to be able to shift it into 4th or 5th gear when I am on the road. Any suggestions? Thanks, Derek

Either the tranny is blown, or you need to readjust the shift linkage... ianc

Assuming it is the shift linkage which I would start with as a first step. What would I do with it - move it forward, to the back? I do not recall there being alot of options to adjust the linkage - doesn't the bolt have a pointed tip that goes in to a hole? Thanks, Derek

You're looking to adjust the side to side motion of the coupler behind the seats under the cover plate. The screw you describe locates the coupler on the transmission shaft, but the coupler is clamped to the shift linkage rod at the other end. Play with this and make sure you have adequate lateral motion to engage 4th and 5th. A search will reveal plenty of material on the mechanics of the adjustment process. ianc

One thing that may be happening is the bushing are worn, I ran in to the same troulbe when I was done my car, I changed the bushing out in the rear coupling and I had all five gears, good luck Derek

undoubtedly the shift coupler is simply out of adjustment..when the engine and tranny were re-installed they just didn't get it set correctly. there's an art to getting it just right and it may take a couple attempts to get it where you want it. remove the cover in the back floorboard and take the pair of wrenches to loosen coupler. start by moving gear shifter lever all the way to the left and with your right hand, physically move coupler all the way to the right. tighten coupler. now try shifting the gears. from here you may have to loosen again and adjust gear shifter in different points 'up and down' to get it right. good luck. ryan
