Targa bar help

I have a 1980 sc targa and I need to take the back window out for paint. One member told me I needed to remove targa bar and that's my issue. I removed every screw that I could find and still it won't budge did porsche use adhesive on the cover or what? Or maybe I'm missing something? Please help

there are two nuts you have to remove on each side, and they are accessed through the wheel wells. did you take those off?

Dpmulvan 03-02-2015 11:53 AM

Thanks! What are my odds of not snapping those off 100 to 1?

hit them with some pb blaster or similar for a day or two before you try to get them off.

if the car has been in the NE all its life a d seenthe snow alot, then not good. But I got the 30 years old nuts off my Southern call, no problem. Good luck.

I remember them being speed nuts on my 81, like on the hood emblem. But it has been over ten years.

Bob, I think the nuts that hold the bar on were regular nuts and the trim piece under the rubber glass seal (the trim that goes from the bar backwards toward the back of the car) is held on with speed nuts. Both sets of nuts are inside the rear quarter panels.

They are regular nuts and I hit them with pb blaster actually they don't look too bad car was from Virginia. I got a lot of work to do!!

Thanks for the help guys. One thing I noticed is that the interior pieces around the targa top don't seem to be engineered too well a lot of vinyl glued over rubber, metal et. Don't know how I'm gonna get her back to showroom condition, can you still find interior pieces for these targas???

A lot of what I've seen is people having pieces recovered/remade. Like the black vinyl covering the underside of the targa bar, which is apparently a Big Project. Dan Petchel at Cars Inc. can tell you a lot about the top itself.

Ahhh. Thank you.

I do remember those trim pieces appeared to be brass under the black anodizing stuff. Maybe some heavy coating but definitely something you do not see on Honda trim.

These cars are pretty slick. Still old school in semi-recent times.

Yes you can! Autos international carries the vinyl you would need. LOTs of dissassembley required to just replace the targa bar vinyl pieces. I recently finished and its a ton of work. I had droopy viny and now it's as good as new! Happy to help if I can.

Looks great I guess that's the path I will have to take. What kind of cement did you use on the vinyl?

Ayles 03-03-2015 04:33 AM

I used dap weldwood on the vinyl to metal and used 3m ultra trim adhesive on the foam to vinyl.
