Even the mighty.....
Look very similar to the slip that cost Richard Burns the World Rally championship recently. Burns was leading the NZ Rally by north of 40 seconds - just needed a clean run through the final two stages.
Speed showed the in-car camera view nearing the end of the stage. He nipped an apex, got up on the outside two, the tires dug in and he rolled it into the ditch. DNF the stage and lost the rally. The win would have wrapped up the 2002 title.

And 2 days ago evidently Burns crashed in a testing run...funny thing is he was driving Panizzi's car. I don't think Panizzi is very pleased.

You guys kill me! I dunno if he wet himself, but I bet there was a very defined crease down the middle of the drivers seat!

You guys like near misses, huh? Here's some bumpercam footage from Maine this summer (mpeg, about 3.5MB):

As I recall, Burns was 23 points behind Gronholm going into the Rally NZ and Gronholm was in second position when Burns crashed out so even if Burns had won he would only have reduced his deficit by four points from 23 to 19 with two rounds remaining. Burns didn't lose the world championship by crashing out of NZ - he lost it by being consistently slower than Gronholm from the start of the season - IMHO Doug |
