Taking the 911 out of storage -- should I wait?
Normally I wait for a good rainstorm to wash all the salt off the roads before waking my vintage jalopies from their winter hibernation. But this year, here in Chicago, the weather is beautiful and the roads are dry, but no rain in the forecast. I'm obviously itching to get the 911 on the road.
So I'm curious: are you guys in the Midwest driving or still waiting? |
Here in the NE, there's still snow on the ground, and I'm guessing salt on the roads. There's no way I'm taking my babies out. Salt=rust. Porsches love rust.

The weather is great but you know how it is here give it a day and it will change
I'm going to wait a bit. Too much salt dust on the street |
Nope, that salt is covering everything still, I'm waiting for a good rain and street sweep before I risk it.
|
I'm in Kansas City. Weather is fantastic and the cars are out of hibernation and enjoying being used. I say drive it.
|
Got the itch but holding off for another couple of weeks. Once we get some good rainstorms to wash the roads it will be better.
The SC is on jack stands for wheel painting so it's probably easier for me to keep it there for now. I have to change the oil, bleed the brakes, and a few other tasks anyway. |
More salt on the roads in Maine than there is pavement it seems. We are many weeks away, I fear. I would definitely wait until the rains wash the salt away. Just isn't worth the exposure. Go for a "garage ride, as we call 'em.

Rained Friday and Saturday here. That good enough for me.[img]http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads24/image1426443735.jpg.

I'm in KC as well and can't keep it in the garage.
|
I'm in NW Ohio and planning to drive my car tomorrow. Supposed to be 70 and we've had a few light rains.
|
I keep my 73.5 Targa on the other side of the Mountains at a rental house in the winter. Such a warm winter, I brought in back over the pass at night with the top off in Feb. this year.....
I say, if the road is dry, drive and enjoy. |
i'm jealous. Forecast for anour 12-15 inches of snow here tonight and tomorrow, so still a while for me. I am figuring end of April earliest :-(
|
Started mine up today and rolled her out on the drive...to much melt water sand and salt out yet to hit the road.
|
Spent 6 hrs yesterday cleaning, clay bar, buff, wax..... Got the itch real bad today but resisted. Salt not much of a concern since its rained and most of the snow has melted, Potholes are the big deterrent for me. Roads are horrible here.
|
I'm in north central Connecticut, plenty of snow all around. I'll be 61 this year. I take the 911 whenever I can. I'll rust away well before the car ever does. Just hose it down after the ride.

I saw a Ferrari out this weekend in Ct. I wouldn't have done that but I gotta say it was fun to see it. Some people look forward to seeing flowers bloom in the spring, for me it's cars.
For those who can't understand why we have to be so protective up here, let me paint the picture. It isn't just the salt, it's the sand they put down that gathers into piles after the melt and even the first rainstorm does not take it away. It makes every tight corner a possible 180 degree spin plus the worry about the truck in front of you throwing all that junk on your paint. Then this year the potholes are turning every drive into autocross avoiding potholes like cones. The daily freeze-melt opens up 6 inch holes that fill with black water waiting for a suspension system to wander over. Jealous of all of you who don't have to worry about this, or don't care. |
Took my RS out yesterday. Weather was beautiful. We did not get alot of snow, so the gravel is really light - just watch how I drive.
Also it is supposed to hit 86 today!!!!! WTF??? |
I'm up in Milwaukee, and the car has now been on the road for about 5 days. The snow melt got them pretty clean, and the weather is too nice to say "no".
Now I need to fix the driver's door handle so I don't look like a dork reaching through to open it. But that requires 2 hours of nice weather, and if that happens, I'm driving! |
Here in Minnesota, I have already had mine out for a week, and loving the unseasonably warm March weather.
|
We still have 18+ inches on the ground here in Mass. I just bought mine last Friday and sadly it's just sitting in my garage waiting for mother nature to do her thing. I just can't bring myself to drive it on roads with melting snow.
