who manufactures/sells the best quality fiberglass bumpers?
I have decided to change the look of my car to include Carrera RS bumpers which would be appropriate for a 1974 model. I currently have turbo flares front and rear and want to get rid of the steel bumpers and go with the lightweight aftermarket pieces.
![]() Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with the vendors who manufacture or sell these and was hoping to get some guidance as to who might be good and who might be not so good, based upon your recent experiences. I'm not just looking for the lightest piece, I would like something that is structurally sound and fits well too. Thanks in advance for your help. Last edited by moparrob; 03-11-2015 at 02:49 PM.. |

Both of my 911s have Rennspeed bumpers, I've had good experiences with fitment and quality so far.

I'd love to ditch my bumpers too but remember that they are fragile and leave you with no impact protection.

True, but life itself is fragile so no need to worry excessively in my book..

I really like the look of your car. The green looks great too.
Getty design has a great rep for their stuff.

I've also heard getty design is good. TRE stuff is also supposed to be good too. Both are local in socal, which helps as well.

I went with GT Racing for my ducktail after going with Rennspeed for my front valance. Love the duck, the valance was total crap and has since been thrown to the dogs. Total crap that was 2" too narrow. He is local though.

If you like the look of your current fiberglass front bumper valance, you can get the complete bumper in that style from BetterBodies here in San Diego. The mold was based off a RUF BTR, like the one below. I can't speak to the fit quality yet as I am still a long way off trial fitting it, but any fiberglass part is going to need tweaking if you are at all particular about alignment etc. They are a friendly bunch.

I have not had any good luck with fiber glass parts. They all need a lot of work to fit and look right before painting. RSR all parts came from GT Racing... you can see my thread for the amount of work that went into getting those correctly fitted and all the modifications that had to be made RS no idea where those came from as I got them with the boxes of parts that came with this project... those had to be cut in half, one half fitted and tested, corners had to be modified, etc. everything then was put back as one piece.... yeah, lots of work. End result was great, but man did Alejandro (I can't do bodywork...just do not have the skill and patience for it...) spend a lot of hours/days working his magic and art on those parts...

Don't forget, what you save in poor produced f/g parts will be lost when you have to pay someone to properly fit it. It's a Porsche, not a Honda Civic..

I had no issues with the fit of the front and rear TRE bumpers on my '86 Carrera. The rear was about 3/8" wide on each side, but there was enough flex in the bumper/quarter panel to allow it to be bolted up evenly.
I liked that the oil cooler opening wasn't cut out. I didn't like that the round brake cooler openings were cut so short on the inside that a hose could not be simply slipped on. How to install the turn signal lights was not obvious to me, but an email to TRE cleared that up. The main part of the work was attaching them (brackets were supplied), and prepping for paint. Very happy with the result. Mike

The really high quality expensive fiberglass parts are expensive and require less prep because you've paid someone the extra $400 per part to prep them for you. So they'd better look amazing when they arrive.
If you're having a body shop do the work it makes sense to buy the "prepped" more expensive product so you're not paying extra for shop time. If you're doing all the work yourself, you can decide if it's worth your time.

In most cases even "high line" fiberglass parts require modification if you are looking for a "factory fit". My 930 Ruf front bumper (complete with Ruf serial # plate) required modification of all of the parking light brackets so that the lenses sat flush with the surface of the bumper at both ends as in the center. The distance between the mounting flange that bolts to the cross panel had to be cut off and extended so that there was no stress on the center of the bumper when it was bolted to the cross panel; otherwise the fit of this $2400 piece was fairly decent! As far as crash protection is concerned, I fabricated HD cross bars behind the bumpers that are attached to "Eruo Crush Tubes". If there're of interest, I'll gladly post photos.

^ Oh yea, totally interested. I fabricate my own crush tubes out of plastic to keep the weight down. I'm always interested in a good design.

Very interested to see the cross bar / tube support design, and also the plastic tube design as I am repairing and reinforcing an older fibreglass front bumper. Any pics would be appreciated.

I have pics of the plastic tube process at home. I'll start a new thread tonight as to not go off topic here. It's easy though, $30 in materials from any hardware store and 3-4 hours of assembly to get a bumper mounted.
