Best way to part out a Porsche?

Ok for all of you that have done this before what's the best way to go about it...

Take pictures of the items on the car first? or tear down the whole thing and take pictures of the individual parts?

Best places to put adds at...(well here first of course and then ebay...but then where?)
And are there some good places to host some pics for free?

Better to try to just sell it? or part it?

I think the body is pretty straight so after I sell the parts should I try selling the body...or just take it down to the local junkyard...
A clean title even!

its a 68 911L....with everything in it down to the factory radio...
Heck I don't even know what to ask for half the stuff....anyone got a list of all the parts someone would buy ?

Thanks,

E

First question - what's wrong with it? If it's at all in fixable condition, I would try to sell it.

Parting out cars, IMO, is not that great an idea, unless you own a junkyard. As you sell pieces, you still have a hunk of a car sitting somewhere, which is not pretty to look at.

What I would do would be to find someone who has a similar car and see if they would like to buy a "donor" car. That way, it becomes their problem and you don't have to look at the car anymore.

But again, if the car is in any sort of reasonable condition, sell it whole.

Autobonrun, Robert from St. Joe Missouri and I have all looked at this car for Enigma, and believe me, this car is not fixable. On the other hand it does have (keep in mind this is a SWB car) some 15" fuchs, an original Becker radio, aftermarket fiberglass carrera tail, good front and rear signal housings and a few other goodies that have resale value.

I can help with a few prices:

Carrera tail - if you're throwing in the lid with the tail and it's in good shape, you could probably get $250 - $300.

Fuchs - since they're 15", you won't be able to get as much for them, probably around $300 - $400 for the set.

Not sure what else you want to sell, but my advice would be this: Look at what Pelican (or some other site) sells the part for, deduct 50%, and ask that. If the piece is in especially good condition or is a rare piece, ask 80% of new.

I guess that's all I can help you with, given that's all that I know you're selling. Send me an e-mail if you would like more help from my limited knowledge set.

One way to find what parts go for is to look on E-bay and watch some auctions.

50% of new is awfully high for most parts and 80% would be laughable in most cases. Thise prices work for salvage yards when someone needs a part to fix their can NOW - but won't fly with enthusiasts restoring something of '68 vintage.

There are a few big-ticket items that will get high used prices, but mot stuff will be dime on the dollar.

I COMPLETELY parted out a 1986 911 a couple years back. Luckily I kept a log of all the parts I have sold, including asking price as well as actual selling price. Eric,

That is an impressive list. Why did you part the car out?

Just curious.

That's pretty interesting, Eric.

What do all those numbers add up to?

Bill -

The car sustained damage to the right/rear when it made unscheduled contact with a concrete construction curb/barrier! I had just bought the car, and of course didn't have any insurance yet. The cost of repairs would have been around $6K. Seeing as I just paid $12K for the car, it didn't seem like a wise investment. Not to mention, forking out $12k cash substantially lighted up my wallet. I knew I would probably take too big of a loss trying to sell it as one piece, so I decided to part it out.

Jim -

The last time I checked, the total was around $16.5-$17K. Not bad considering I only paid $12K originally. I would not want to do it again though! However, the actual disassembly of the car was interesting, and I learned a bit along the way.

It's never good to be worth more dead than alive... Keep your life insurance less than 5 years income unless you really trust your friends!

Same goes for cars I guess...

Eric,

thanks for the response. Not a good story, but with a decent ending I guess.
