Third brake light?

Just browsing the forum for more fun upgrades for the SC and it hit me like a ton of bricks.
I have a third brake light.
Was trying to figure out why the other coupes I've been checking out on the forum looked so much better.
Kinda looks like the brake lights on the models with the tails.
Just got my car so don't know much about it, do you guys think it originally came with a tail and the PO switched it out?

I do like the coupes without the tail so have no plans on adding one.

anyways, is there a way to remove this? Or will I just be stuck with a hole to fill?
I do like the sleek look without the light.......is it going to be too much work to change?

I have a similar issue with my Carrera. A PO installed a tail with a third brake light but I already have one in the back window. I was going to try a fabricate a block off plate from aluminum and paint it to match.

I'm not crazy about the rear brake light but it came stock in 88 so I left it on.

But every time I see somebodys old 911 get rear ended by distracted drivers, I'm glad I have it.

I've twice had someone come up fast behind me. Two giggly teenagers in stop and go traffic last year. Second was a guy in his truck coming off an exit. Scared the be-jeezus out of me. I suspect people only look at 3rd brake lights today. There's too many combinations of rear lights nowadays the third brake light is clear.

Classic cars are great but to be driven in traffic they MUST stay relevant and almost every other car out there has a third brake light.

That light was added to your car, no cars prior to 1986 had them originally.

The one on your car appears to be the short version off of a '86-89 cab w/o tail.

3rd Brake Light

My -84 didn't come a 3rd brake lite. The rear brake lights are fairy low and may not be too visible to the 1/2-crazed suv drivers on the road today. To protect my car from getting hit from behind I decided to add an et-type 3rd brake light to the rear wing. I chose a Carrera2 light instead of the -85-89 Carrera1 rear window mounted light.

While the light didn't necessarily enhance the look of my car I feel it is serving it's purpose.

The CHMSL (center high-mounted stop-light, pronounced "chimsel") on my '88 is inside, at the top of the rear window. I assume non-tail '88s have it in the same place. It's a little hard to see in this photo.

This site sells the inside high and inside low third brake light assemblies for the 1987 - 89 Carrera. I installed the inside high model on my 1984 Targa and am very happy with it. Prior to installing it, I had a number of SUVs slam on their brakes just behind me, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

I have a '86 Cab with the Carrera tail and no third light. I am thinking about buying one to add the light. I may doesn't look ideal, but it adds to the safety. I have the wires running up to where the light should be and there are three holes (capped off) to mount it.

Thanks for the info guys.

I agree that it's nice to have it for the safety issues too. Only had the car for 2 weeks and already noticed how much closer everyone comes to my a##.

I would like to get a third brake light inside the car and get rid of the little ET looking one. Just breaks up the nice curves of the car in my opinion.
So if anyone has any ideas or has done it before I'm all ears.

Also go to get rid of the old school cell antenna mounted. Able to just screw off the plastic cap by need to figure out how to close off the hole on top. Thinking of just getting a metal cap made and painting it. Won't be perfectly flush but much better than having it look like a little toy remote car.

I have the Hella LED third brake light that matches the Factory assembly, I installed at the bottom of the rear window as it does not obstruct the view. The LED lights faster than the tail lights and the angle of the lens is adjustable

Recently a buddy of mine with an 86 installed the 2014 cayman led bar, it looks pretty good and very bright. But for me it just did not look correct but very safe

PO removed the short stock 3rd brake light from my 88 cab which was mounted outside due to the cab top because he didn't like the look. Then he added a stock Carrera tail. I found the 3rd brake light in a box of parts he gave me. For the first year or so I had a lot of close calls of cars stopping short behind me. My wife kept telling me about her dad getting rear ended a few times in El Caminos he had as they had low brake lights.

I took the 3rd brake light to my mechanic and he just happened to have a taller 3rd brake light meant for cabs with tails and he took my old one in trade. The short 3rd brake light couldn't be seen above the lip of the tail so that is why there is a tall one, aka the ET 3rd brake light. Haven't experienced folks almost rear-ending me since and that was several years ago now.

If you remove it, you'll have two holes where it was screwed into the deck.
You could go to the auto parts store and get two small plastic "buttons" to put in the holes; the kind they use after shooting undercoating into a door cavity or elsewhere. Paint them to match your car's color if black's no good for you.
Maybe you could get a German auto club/rally badge to hide the holes.

I went to Custom Dynamics and bought their LED 3rd brake light which flashes 4x before going solid red. Very bright and grabs attention. I know they are good because whenever I follow a bike or car with one they are so in your face I get irritated

Just like Bob's, I installed the Kahtec module on my factory 3rd brake light.
