The car is painted, headliner is in and the time has come to put the glass back in the car. I suspect at one time the rear windshield was broken out(due to the amount of glass I cleaned out of the carpet) and replaced. Unfortunately the heating wires were not hooked up on the new glass. I have the wires but no idea how they connect to the glass. I know they attach to the tabs on the glass but which color wires go where? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as well as any words of wisdom for the best way to do this.
Thanks

Targa or coupe? I have a targa with the glass out and could help-I'll check it today or tomorrow, but not sure if its the same as the coupe. The glass guy commented on what a PITA the wiring is on a targa, as the wires need to be fished thru the seal and there are two sets, one on each side.

In your prpfile you state that you own a 78SC but you don't indicate if it is a coupe or targa. If it is a targa I should be able to help with the wiring since I recently pulled the glass and wiring.
This might give you some idea where the wiring goes for the coupe. It is for the 1982 but should be the same. 1982 wiring for rear window defrost

The two stage rear window defrosters have 2 pairs of wires that need to be threaded through the seal around the glass. Most glass installers familiar with Porsche glass installation should be able to route the wires and drill the appropriate exit holes in your seal. This job should take no longer than two hours. I admit I paid a guy $70.00 to set my window up for me but when I picked up the window the seal was around the glass and the black trim was also installed. All my restoration shop guy needed to do was to "cord" the window in.

Oops yes it is a coupe.
I've got the wiring diagram in my workshop manuals but I would like to see some pics or written explanation for what goes where. Thanks

I hired it done when I replaced a cracked rear seal. Gordon, the guy who did it, said: "You know, I'd NEVER do this for a guy with a 911SC..."
(Gordon belongs to R Gruppe)

Picture of rear seal
Here is a picture of the old seal with the wiring to the plug cut off. These were spliced back.

Here is an overall view with the locations of the spade connectors that plug into the wires in the glass (Masking tape)

Thanks Harlan. I'm trying to find a picture as to where the colors hook up to on the glass. I have 2 stage heat.

1979 930 @outlaw3.4
|
I just did this job yesterday on a 79 930. IT was the most frustrating evening ever spent on the car.
The R&R of the window is a snap. The defrost wiring is a PIA. The photos on this thread were very helpful insetting the wires through the window seal. I had to guess on which of the two channels the wires run through to the elements. Long story short..I need to redo. Not happy with it. the wires running along the window inside the seal cause a poor seal. I could use a pic of the wires in the seal going to the elements. PS- avoid the aftermarket seal kit from Sierra Madre. Terrible fit. |
