Backdating: Rear Pop Out Quarter Window Questions
Hi Peli-CAN's!
I've got an '83 SC and I'd like to install rear quarter pop-out windows. I have the left and right pop-out quarters with their latches, but the glass is scratched a bit on the outside (presumably from someone scraping off decals). QUESTIONS:
Thank you in advance everyone, Liam |

Congrats on doing an excellent upgrade to an early 911. As somebody who has performed this conversion on his '79 SC,
1. Does anyone know if the regular (non-pop-out) quarter window glass will fit the pop-out frames? No they won't. I recommend getting yourself some window polish and spend some time trying to polish the scratches out. If you can't, you have some cool patina until another set of windows come along. Also, please note that SWB pop out windows show up for sale on eBay all the time. They won't work on a LWB car. They are just a little smaller in all dimensions, so they seam like they will work, but they will leak really bad. 2. Do the tabs on the pop-outs flex enough to open the window, or is there an actual hinge that attaches to the window frame and b-pillar? No, to both questions. The holes in the tabs and the slots in the B-Pillars that the tabs go into are big enough to enable the window to pivot open. The mounting bolts hold everything in place and the gasket seals keep everything from vibrating. I got 7mm Allen head set screws from Lowe's and they were perfect for mounting at the B-Pillar. They are the right diameter (just tap the existing holes) and they are easy to thread in and out because you'll find out soon enough that things are tight up against the window. 3. Are the pop-out quarter window body moldings necessary, or will the stock SC body moldings suffice for this modification? Do you mean the trim at the bottom of the window? If yes, then no. You need the pop out window lower trim that goes over lower pinch weld and the welting that runs around the top part of the pinch weld. Otherwise, you will develop leaks. |
