Passenger side mirror for 72?
I am replacing the passenger door on my 72 T due to damage to the original door. I have the door fitted correctly and I am getting ready to strip it for paint.
The original door does not have an outside mirror. The replacement door has a black plastic mirror installed. I noticed that our host does not have an original exterior mirror for the 72, but there is a reproduction stainless steel mirror available: Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-TMP-9375 Should I replace the mirror with the reproduction mirror or should I eliminate the mirror (and holes) from my 72? My goal is to make my 72 as original as possible and possible show car (although probably not concours). How common were these passenger side mirrors? Were they even available from Porsche? Any experts want to offer their advise? thanks in advance Donald |

Think it was more common not to have a passenger mirror, my 72T doesn't.

The Genuine Porsche right side mirror is available if you search for part number 911-731-014-07. I ordered both a new left and right side mirror for my car from Pelican. They are Genuine Porsche parts made in Germany and look great.

A passenger side door mirror would be an optional extra in '72. I'd contact Porsche and order the COA for the car to find out if it had a passenger mirror. If you want it as close to original as possible, best to find out and address before painting.

The RH mirrors are not very common on 1969-1973 911s but I think that they do 'balance' the look of the car. If you do install one, make sure to do a search as it is installed assymetrical to the LH side mirror, otherwise it becomes useless. I believe that it is installed slight further back.

Installed oine on my 73 E and it looks cool but is completly useless. The holes on the inside of the door, for mounting the mirror, are for RHD cars.

From what I have heard, there are side mirror captive nuts, factory installed on the inside of each door. However, these captive nuts are in place for RHD & LHD cars. Therefore, if you have a LHD car and install a passenger side mirror on the car using these captive nuts, then the view to this newly mounted mirror will be partially blocked by the door pillar. To mount a passenger side mirror on a LHD car, you'd have to mount it further forward of these captive nuts and thus, drill new holes.
I could be wrong but this it what I discovered when I was thinking of doing the samething. Steve 73 911 T MFI Coupe, Aubergine |

no nuts, have to drill holes through the outter skin. There are holes on the inside of the door pre drilled but using those holes as a guide for the outter holes results in mirror placement identical to the drivers side...the right look but functionally unusable.

Hey Chris -That is one nice looking car.
I do like the looks of the mirrors on both sides of the car. By replacing the current passenger mirror, I will avoid any warping of the sheet metal if I were to fill the holes. Thanks Donald |

Do your homework, as suggested.
Your new door already has holes for the "plastic" mirror (probably a flag mirror) that are in the correct position but will not match the hole pattern for the 72 mirror--body work will need to be done regardless of whether or not you mount a mirror. As warned, do not use the hole alignment found on the inside of the dog leg as your mirror will be out of position (cmcfaul has already posted his picture showing the wrong location.) The correct position is further rearward and higher on the door. There are pictures in other threads showing the correct location for the early mirror which I will post, if I can locate them.

Passenger side early mirror
Here's a picture showing the correct location of the right side mirror. (Thanks to Trecup)
![]() Though the mirror shown is not OEM, it is the same size and mounts the same.

This thread verifies my previous belief that putting a right side mirror in the same relative position as the left side renders it unusable. Does anyone think it looks goofy to have it in a different spot than the mirror on the left side? So far I've resisted the urge to install a right side mirror, but I've become so accustomed to using the right side mirror on my daily driver, that I think it's becoming a safety issue on the 911. Does it look OK to have a right side mirror in a different location than the left side mirror?

Let me clear up some of the misinformation going on this thread before it gets worse.
1) When you specified two mirrors from Porsche back in 1972 and 73, what you got was two round large Durants. 2) The passenger mirror on a left drive car was always set back in the position shown on the light yellow car pic above. This is whether it is a round or flag. 3) The round Durant located on the passenger side, even in the correct location is of little use. It was flat , not convex glass. The range of adjustment is not enough to make it effective. 4) Porsche has issued their classic line of 72/73 AND 74 (larger) mirrors in both left and right versions. So the right side 74 you received was incorrect. There is a high quality 72/73 version available. (we keep stock on our shelves, just like our host does) 5) When the flag style gets installed on the right side, it is more effective than the round style, and certainly over the incorrectly installed ones like the red car pictured above. You don't sit in the middle of the car, so symmetrical installations won't work 6) Installing a passenger side mirror means removing the door panel, so you can access the new holes you drill in the door. We have not found any need for a reinforcing plate like the heavier 76 and later power mirrors. Hope this helps

My passenger side mirror is not in the "technically correct" place and is instead identical to the driver side. I can see thru it just fine and it is not block by the window frame at all.

Dave, you have a PM about the mirror you sell.
For everyone's reference, the one on the Pelican site (listed as a repro) is not a Porsche Classic part and IMO, quality was lacking. YMMV. The one I photographed was referenced in this thread by drtyler and is not the correct part. If you want a matching passenger side mirror, look elsewhere. This part came in a Porsche Classic box with a porsche printed part number. Still looking for viable options...

arrivederci,
I apologize about my post. The Porsche Classic website lists those part numbers for 70-77 cars. I bought a pair for my car, as the previous owner replaced the stainless mirrors with later flag style mirrors, so I didn't have anything to compare them to. Again, I'm really sorry that my post created confusion. DT |
