Nice video, but the 911's are all '87 +
so perhaps filmed in sept or later 1986.
Thanks for posting.

I see sealed-beam headlights on the U.S. cars, and third brake light, so they are MY1986.

I believe that the third brake light on the 911 M/Y '86 Targa & Coupes was always located on the top of the rear window.

And, for the following 3.2 years, it was moved to the bottom of the rear window.

The H4s next to the sealed beam sugar scoops instead of H5s is a tip off. I didn't clue in to that right away.

The only way I could tell is from the car that was driving down the aisle between the racking and its rear reflector. The '86 cars had black PORSCHE lettering, while the '87s had red lettering. This kinda looks black to me, so 1986 then.

I've seen them in both spots on the same year of car. I've also seen the ET finger lights on a non-cabriolet, as well, but that coulda been a customer change, I suppose...

All those hands building these cars, and people wonder why they are going up in value so fast. The cabriolet tops look like a lot of work.

Question

It is great to see what the production line was like around the time my current 911 was assembled. Thanks a lot for posting.

My '87 sunroof coupe (w. f & r spoilers) has the 3rd brake light at the top of the rear window. Based on the tag, the manufacturing date for my car was 03-87. I have yet to get a definitive answer on when the 3rd brake light location change was made, but perhaps it was implemented on some cars and not on others because of the tail and/or the rear window wiper arm. My car also had the (dealer installed?) radio telephone with a rear window antenna, so maybe that also had something to do with it. Or maybe not.

If anyone has the definitive answer on this, it would be nice to know.

Winner-Winner-chicken dinner.

You are correct, rear spoiler-high tail light......................

Gerry

And by the way, It was not my intention to start a 3rd light debate.

Not to get further off the subject of the great video, but just to clarify, 1986 and 1989 have the CHMSL at the top of the glass, while 1987 and 1988 could have either top or bottom, and not correlating to options. Many ET-style CHMSLs on spoiler-optioned, M491, and Turbo coupes and Targas out there, which would have been built when the lights were otherwise at the bottom of the rear glass. As well as non-spoilered 1987 and 1988 coupes and Targas with the light up high. I assume there was a switchover at some point during MY1987, and a switch back during MY1988, rather than being random.

An ET-style light on a non-spoiler coupe ot Targa would either have been added (or had the spoiler removed), conversely a low mounted light on a spoiler car would be a giveaway that the spoiler is not original.

isn't the biggest giveaway of the year in the torsion bar hole in the quarter panel?

Awesome video...

1) Holy Moly is the hand work amazing.

2) That Cab that guy pulled on that dolly looks really, really small.

3) I really need to get it together and get a lift. It's the only proper way to work on these cars.

No. I have a MY86 coupe and it has larger torsion bar hole, built late summer 1986.
