Question Hesitation on take-off, then smooths out (CIS)...any general ideas?

Once I again I consult the 'wisdom of the board'...

My '74 911 2.7 CIS car (stock 911) always seems to have a problem with initial hesitation on take-off in 1st gear. You press the accelerator and it hesitates and then bolts...usually just as you're going for 2nd gear, making for a clumsy transition. As you climb the gears the problem vanishes. Very, very noticeable in 1st gear, however. In the past year I have done nothing new to the ignition system or the fuel system for that matter, except for having the points cleaned and re-opened after they had closed last year.

Where does it sound like I should start troubleshooting? It's not like I can't drive the car by any means...I just don't like the 'driveability' initially when departing a stop light. Is this just a function of the engine being cold? Would these symptoms necessarily implicate the ignition or fuel sytem? If so, which then?

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions (other than 'sell the 2.7 and get a real motor!')

Ryan

I would verify timing first and make sure the points are gapped properly. Your car should have no problems running when cold. My car scoots fine cold or hot. If all else fails, when was the last time you changed the rotor, plugs, fuel filter, cap?

Like Targa said. Also, recent switch to Gasahol?

Check your clutch cable specs at the trans and change the fuel filter. Just before your next oil change be sure to run 20oz of Techron through the system, put into an empty tank and fill up, run like heck, at 1/2 tank refill and run the rest out.

All of this is standard work anyway so no waste of time.

Good luck, sorry not to be of more help.

John

Hey guys,

I've had the car a year and have not replaced those items. The idea about the points gets my interest, as they had closed up last December. My wrench didn't have any in stock, so he just cleaned and re-opened them. The car has been running since then so I haven't replaced them yet. As for plugs, rotor, fuel filter, etc. none have been changed yet either. It may be time for these things to be addressed as I don't know their history. My records on the car are great, however, I may be able to figure that out with a little patience. Techron would be another great idea.
Thanks for the advice guys,
Ryan

Make shure your mechanical advance is working.Pull the distributor cap and twist the rotor. It should spring back. If not pull rotor off and look inside dist. shaft you will see a felt pad. Remove this and put some penetrating oil in the dist shaft. You may have to let it sit over night. It is common for the mechanical advance to sieze up if a few drops off oil is not put in there once and a while.

One more thing about the points: Make sure that you put Bosch Grease on the distributor cam after adjusting these. If not, the rubbing block will be worn down prematurely due to friction and this will affect timing/dwell.

Targa77,
Will local stores like AutoZone or Napa carry Bosch grease?
Thanks,
Ryan
