I wouldn't do it on top, underneath yes, but you run the risk of peeling paint off some things. Has to be done intelligently.
On top there are too many electrical items that cn corrode or be damaged. Hand washing is sufficient.

I just had steam cleaning last week.
In SF Bay Area Santa Clara County Engine Steam Cleaning Located in San Jose - San Jose Auto Steam Cleaning 30 minutes later, it looks nearly showroom clean. The transaxle/axles/engine/suspension was caked w black oil crud. I tried degreasers, power washing w little success. Not cheap @ $150, but considering the alternative (me scraping and scrubbing toxic cr@p in my driveway) I was happy to have it done. Note: steam cleaned my VW Westy, not my spotless 911. |

True steam cleaners don't rely on lot of water pressure. You may be thinking of a hot water pressure washer. I own both. If i need to remove a lot of cruddy caked on grease and oil the steam cleaner is the tool to use.

I'm a pro detailer and Concours preparer here in Orange County.
I am personally NOT a fan of high pressure steam cleaning the top of these engines. I work by hand. YES, it's slower, but you aren't shooting high pressure water into various cavities and electrical connectors... I have seen peeled undercoating and other damage from high pressure cleaning. Send me an email at cooper.boggs@gmail.com if you want to discuss. Cooper's classy car care. I'm a straight shooter with 20 years of expierence and am very active in the PCA Concours scene. Happy to give free advice or point you in the right direction. I recently spent 20 hours preparing the top of a 964 engine. You can DIY, it takes some time, the right materials, and patients.
