Ever hide your Porsche passion?
I've seen that a lot of Porsche owners have owned VWs in the past. As you know, EVERYONE seems to have a VW story and when I drive my '69 Westy it's smiles and "thumbs up" everywhere.
But, hop into a higher performance German vehicle and you get snarky comments: midlife crisis, quips about income, etc. And folks definitely treat you differently in traffic. Does this ever cause you to hide your Porsche passion? |

Hell no, I keep my eyes front where it belongs and can't hear any comments with my loud exhaust.
But I do get a bunch of thumbs up =) Heck I wear my Porsche cap all the time and even when I work, wear my Porsche shirts =) Jim

I don't hide I but I don't flaunt(Mine's an SC so there isn't anything to flaunt anyway.)
Driving respectfully is what I do and did when we had the BMW, too. Driving like a di@# can only reinforce the stereotype of the "porsh" owner. I'm a pretty private person but I will gladly talk to most anybody that wants to discuss cars. There are loads of cool cars around here, mostly domestic, but I always make the effort to give the driver a nod or thumbs up. I dig most any type of hot rod.

Never.
I am always excited to discuss the history of the marque to anyone who strikes up conversation. If anyone makes a comment about expense/wealth etc I turn it into a joke that I'd be more than willing to educate them that the car is my passion, I could have bought 2 for the cost of their late model minivan, and my wife thinks it's my mistress... The minivan comment usually stops them in their tracks

I live in Georgia. My '69 Camaro SS receives a hundred times more attention than the Porsche.

The entire ~everyone wants and is willing to pay crazy $$$ for a '69~ thing kills me ![]() I was at a show last weekend here in CT and the "euro" section was getting little or no attention while everything with a huge boat anchor between the fenders was being drooled over. (Some serious 356s and a number of hot-rodded SWB cars were amongst the euros. Also, no offense as I was brought up with American Muscle in the garage and still love it)

Americans are jealous types. We hate it when someone else seems to be ahead in life. Your VW does not threaten people's sense of their own well-being. A Porsche does. Drive a Porsche in Europe and get waved at or ignored--not because they don't want to acknowledge your Porsche but because they are not competitive a-holes over such things. Americans love to hate on one-another and sometimes a Porsche just reminds other people of their own shortcomings. There, I said it. ![]() (But if you act like an arrogant jerk in your Porsche, or VW, then you deserve the public's scorn and ridicule.)

Hell no.. Hide?? I don't hide anything, not even fear. ![]() but when you look or see me, you would never think I'd own that Porsche that you saw me get out of, let alone owning a Porsche. Got plenty of Porsche wear after 29 years and don't give a damn what anybody thinks.

I don't own a PORSCHE hat or shirt....would never wear one. I don't bring it up unless some car guys ask if I have any toys, then I'll show em a pic on my phone. I don't hide it but I sure don't flash it around. I do however catch myself throwing the hammer down and then going...no, no....don't drive like the douche bag they expect you to be!

Family and friends may be the worst when it comes to the comments. My BMW 2002 was a rusty, cheapo to pick up. But everyone associates it with a "rich man's" car. I'm on the hunt for my first 911. I can't wait to tinker on one like my Vdubs and 02, but I dread some of the reactions I'm sure to get. |

I try to drive reasonably, and not push the car, but it does beg to be pushed. I have to restrain myself. I have been accosted about the car by a total stranger who made their feelings completely clear about my waste of natural resources and being a slave to my possessions. What I found ironic was that my car was parked between to full-sized gasoline-powered pickup trucks. Even when I use that right pedal a little too enthusiastically, I never dip into pickup truck fuel use territory. And as to being a slave, the very second this car becomes more of a hassle than a pleasure, it'll be put up for sale. I have never kept anything that didn't serve a concrete purpose. I very much enjoy driving it, and the folks that want to pretend that I am trying to relive my youth or am showing off the size of my bank account can just go right ahead and believe exactly what they want to. |

This. When my wife told her sister I bought a 911, she was very negative about it, saying "people only buy cars like that to show that they are better than everyone else". I am sure if I spent double the money on a loaded new SUV she wouldn't have blinked.

Just don't drive like a dick, act like a dick, or be a dick. Don't be bothered by what other people say or think as long as you know you're not doing anything wrong. They're probably just jealous.
That being said, I agree with some of the other posts. I don't go around wearing any Porsche-related merchandise, don't have anything on my desk either. I get complements about my car from those who appreciate it. I'm sure there are people too who think to themselves, how can he afford that? They don't know or care that it's an old car, that I didn't buy it for the brand or as a status symbol (otherwise I would've bought a Merc, as I grew up in a country were the Merc is the de facto rich man's car). I too grew up driving a 69 Beetle, and the 911 seemed to have been a natural progression from that. After all, it's just a flattened Beetle, as Jeremy Clarkson always says. |

As was already mentioned, I always make it a point to mention the fact that my old Pcars cost considerably less than a new accord or camry

The whole stable of cars that we have at the house, plus the boat, plus the boat's tow vehicle, all their purchase prices did not add up to the cost of this new Forester. It's a nice car, sure. But it's no 911. |

The supposition that most are jealous, is a bit too naïve and egocentric for me. Most people could give a rip what other people drive. Chances are they are too wrapped up in their own lives to waste the energy to give anyone's car the time of day. If your attitude is that people either envy or hate you because of what you drive, you may want to reexamine your self importance.
I am another who does not flaunt what I drive, don't drop the car in conversation, or go out of my way that I even own it. My identity is not tied up in my ride. What I drive is my business, and no one else's. If some one wants to talk cars, then we talk cars, if not there is plenty else going on in this world to discuss. My ego is not tied up in what I drive or don't drive. If Porsche wants me to advertise for them by wearing Porsche clothes, hats, etc, they can dam well pay me to do it - but chances are I would turn them down unless the money was too good to refuse. I don't bill board for any corporation. YMMV

these days im ok with making it known. Since every other thing in my life is not quite up to the porsche standards. Bad clothes, no job, you get the point. But around others that are less fotrunate. hell yea. always try to fit in. People think high end cars always come with high end price tags. thats the nature of the beast

Your second statement is true, most people don't care. On the other hand, I actually have been in conversations with some people (who aren't friends of mine for good reason) saying that so and so must be rich, being able to afford such and such, but I bet he ...(insert something negative here). So it's more than a supposition for me. I just avoid those people.
